Astra Publishing House is seeking a Marketing Director to work across its two children’s book divisions, Boyds Mills & Kane and minedition. In this critical leadership role, the Marketing Director will create and implement strong vision and innovative, of-the-moment marketing plans for our high-quality children’s books. The Marketing Director reports to the COO of Astra Publishing House.

The ideal candidate is passionate about children’s books—including board books, picture books, and middle grade and YA fiction and nonfiction—and excited to drive growth and increase awareness for two established, well-respected brands that are part of a new and dynamic publishing house. As head of the marketing and publicity department, the candidate will engage with editors, authors, freelance contractors, booksellers, salespeople, members of the media, and readers.

What you’ll do:
- Capitalize on current trends to create a vision for marketing approximately 35 frontlist Boyds Mills & Kane titles and 10 frontlist minedition titles per year
- Keep on top of sales trends and be forward-thinking about discovering exciting new avenues for marketing in the current climate
- Spearhead effective marketing plans targeting educational as well as consumer markets
- Conceive and implement season-by-season marketing strategy that draws on a mix of creative thought and data
- With Publisher and Editorial Directors, identify lead titles for each list
- Work collaboratively with editors, authors, Marketing Manager, and Marketing Assistant to craft customized campaigns for lead titles and maximize each title’s/series’ potential
- Look for new opportunities to creatively boost key backlist titles
- Build overall brand awareness of Boyds Mills & Kane and minedition
- Define and implement long-term marketing strategy for ongoing imprint success
- Oversee marketing and publicity staff and freelancers
- Hire marketing/publicity/social media staff plus freelancers
- Oversee and manage annual marketing budget, including individual campaign budgets
- Attend and present at sales presentations, trade shows, book festivals, conventions, and conferences
- Write excellent press materials and effective pitches
- Ensure excellent communications with our distributor regarding marketing plans
- Occasionally purchase ad space or provide other assistance to our sister imprint Astra House (adult literary fiction and nonfiction)

What you’ll bring:
- Ability to balance traditional book marketing with cutting-edge, contemporary strategy
- Familiarity with the retail, educational, wholesale, and specialty marketplaces
- A minimum of 8 years of experience in marketing children’s books
- Demonstrable experience planning and executing successful marketing campaigns
- Knowledge and understanding of the publishing process
- Excellent communication skills, including exceptional writing skills
- Proven ability to work with talent on book launches, media, and events
- Strong relationships with a wide range of media
- Experience presenting in front of large groups including internal meetings
- Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Knowledge of and comfort with using social media as a marketing and public relations tool
- Ability to work independently as well as within a collaborative team environment
- Self-motivation, persistence, and a goal-oriented working style
