Kidsbooks is seeking an experienced, creative and enthusiastic children’s book designer to join our team.

• Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

o Book design, typesetting, and composition for covers and interiors using InDesign for children’s books

o Work directly with illustrators and manage project deadlines and details on assigned children’s and book titles

• The designer creates graphic design and production work that results in innovative, well-designed titles with target audience appeal.

• Multiple projects are managed simultaneously, developing creative, appropriate, and marketable solutions, designing projects from conception through publication.

• Participate in design review meetings, presenting concepts and final designs

• Maintains database of all files and artwork

• Ensure project budget is maintained through all steps of the project

• Ensure permission requirements are met

• Adhere to Kidsbooks production standards on design, pre-flight and image adjustment

• Ability to work on range of children’s book formats and book covers, including board, coloring, educational, sound, cloth

• Ability to bring forward new ideas to the table and provide strong feedback for other designers' projects

• Ability to work with back list titles and brands to provide a fresh design for re-launch

• Knowledge of common book embellishments: embossing, spot UV, die cuts and ability to create printer-friendly files

• Ability to collaborate with other designers and sales and marketing teams

• Strong desire to create fun, innovative, engaging, inspiring books that stand out in a crowded field

• Experience managing and maintaining the corporate website

Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:

• At least five years’ experience in children’s book design/publishing
• Expert in Adobe Creative Cloud (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator)
• Proven project management skills, including an ability to plan and develop schedules, establish priorities, and work with freelancers and other departments to meet deadlines
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to think creatively in a collaborative team environment
• Detail oriented and calm under pressure, with the ability to juggle multiple projects at one time
• Flexibility and responsiveness during design review process
• High interest in contemporary typography and design trends as can be applied to book design
• Actively aware of audiences and customers of the publisher’s products
• Strong visual design capabilities
• Desire to work hard in a fun, hyper creative culture and become an industry leader in children’s book publishing.

Kidsbooks Publishing is a Chicago based, American children’s book publisher that has been in business since 1992 creating a wide range of entertaining and educational books in a variety of fun formats. Our primary focus is developing book titles for children ages 10 and under. We are now expanding our product lines into older age ranges as well as enlarging our non-fiction portfolio.
