Requirements:
Basic Books is seeking a Senior Editor to acquire and edit serious nonfiction for the Basic Books and Seal Press lists. The editor will be responsible for acquiring and publishing approximately 10 new hardcover titles per year. The successful candidate will have a strong background in working with top experts in a range of fields to develop book ideas for a general readership, and a demonstrated interest in women’s issues and gender studies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Commissioning, acquiring, and editing manuscripts for publication.
Successfully negotiating deals.
Working effectively with authors and agents in all phases of the publishing process, from acquisition to through publication date and beyond.
Supervising the production process by acting as the in-house liaison between editorial and the production, design, and managing editorial departments.
Collaborating with the publicity and marketing teams to package and position books.
Developing 2-4 backlist revisions each year

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Excellent conceptual and line-editing abilities.
Bachelor’s Degree
Minimum of 8 years of experience in publishing or related industry
Excellent written and verbal communication skill
Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines
Excellent organizational skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team setting
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel & Outlook
