Boyds Mills & Kane and minedition are award-winning publishers of fiction and nonfiction books for children and young adults. We are looking for a Production Manager. The ideal candidate is someone who is highly organized and efficient and will thrive on detail-oriented tasks. The candidate will have strong project management skills and an eye for design/color, be able to take initiative and problem-solve independently, be an excellent communicator, and be able to manage a varied workload. The person in this position will work in our Manhattan office (though will most likely work offsite initially), with the flexibility to work from home one day per week, and will work in close proximity to all members of the BMK and minedition office teams (production, design, marketing, sales, and editorial) and others, to be announced soon. The ideal candidate will have at least eight years of experience in publishing production, producing the very best of books ranging from picture books to novels and nonfiction.

Software/computer skills: Must have excellent InDesign and good Photoshop skills;
must be able to use Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Microsoft Office.
Smartsheet a plus.

Responsibilities include:

– Manage all aspects of book production from layout through delivery of books to distributor

– Advise on book specs (trim size, paper type, binding, etc.) and create P&Ls for various print quantities

– Coordinate production schedules with Managing Editor’s master schedule to meet critical deadlines for marketing materials (including production of F&Gs/ARCs), files to printer, proof approvals, and delivery of books to warehouse.

– Solicit quotes from multiple vendors for review based on agreed specifications. Manage all printer/vendor agreements/invoicing.

– Collect and build case and jacket templates in InDesign based on selected vendor’s spec sheet.

– Manage outsourcing scans of physical artwork and manage proofing and color corrections with scanner and printer. Knowledge of presses and impositions as well as an eye for color is key, as is clear communication with design and editorial as to color outcomes based on material selections.

– Liaise with distributor and work within distributor’s portal on print quantities/schedules and incoming book shipments. Prepare all needed forms as related to receipt of finished goods, collect packing slips, BOLs, and all documentation as related to the title’s manufacturing through to invoice.

– Maintain organization of BMK file archives (such template library, archive of final native files and press PDFs once books have completed manufacturing)

– Work with various team members on organizational and process projects as we define roles and workflows
