Boyds Mills & Kane is award-winning publisher of fiction and nonfiction books for children and young adults. We are looking for a Production Editor to assist the Production Director, Art Director, and other staff. We are looking for someone who is highly organized and efficient and will thrive on detail-oriented tasks. The ideal candidate will have strong project management skills and an eye for design, be able to take initiative and problem-solve independently, be an excellent communicator, and be able to manage a varied workload. The person in this position will work in our midtown office, with the flexibility to work from home one day per week, and will work in close proximity to all members of the BMK office team (production, design, marketing, sales, and editorial). The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ experience in publishing production.

Software/computer skills: Must have excellent InDesign and Photoshop skills;
must be able to use Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Microsoft Office.

Proofreading and light copyediting skills a plus

Responsibilities include:

• Assist Production Director in all aspects of book production

• Prepare digital marketing materials needed at various points during the book development process. This would include file conversions (JPGs, PDFs, and TIFFs) for uploads to various outlets and fulfillment of author/illustrator requests.

• Record final book specs as agreed on by editor, designer, and production director

• Solicit quotes from multiple vendors for review based on agreed specifications.
Collect and build case and jacket templates in InDesign based on selected vendor’s spec sheet.

• Coordinate production schedules with Managing Editor’s master schedule to meet critical deadlines for marketing materials (Sales Conference, Catalog, ARCs, and F&Gs), files to printer, proof approvals, and delivery of books to warehouse

• Liaise with distributor and work within distributor’s portal on confirmation of print quantities/schedules and incoming book shipments. Prepare all needed forms as related to receipt of finished goods, collect packing slips, BOLs, and all documentation as related to the title’s manufacturing through to invoice.

• Assist with production prepress work as needed including image conversions, simple cleanups, pulling files from archives for reissues, creating bar codes, etc.

• Manage organization of BMK file archives (maintain template library, organize production and marketing folders for working files, archive final native files and press PDFs once books have completed manufacturing)

• Work with various team members on organizational and process projects as we define roles and workflows
