HMH Books & Media, one of the world’s leading publishers, is seeking a Publicity Associate to join our dynamic and collaborative publicity team. The person in this position will support the publicity manager as well as work on select titles independently—write press releases and pitch letters, assist with booking media and arrange author tours, book signings and virtual events, create mailing lists, and participate in launch, marketing, and other brainstorming meetings—with supervision from the publicity manager. Headliners on our list include Paul Theroux, Veronica Roth, Tim O’Brien, Guy Raz, Adam Hochschild, Adrienne Brodeur, Lori Gottlieb, and David Nicholls. We're looking for someone who has a passionate interest in a variety of genres—science, technology, politics, and history as well as fiction, mystery, and science fiction and fantasy—top notch communication skills, creativity, and an ability to build buzz by tapping into online, social, and podcasting communities.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Drafting press materials, including press releases, pitch and galley letters, interview alerts, quote sheets, etc.
Liaising with bookstores to organize author events.
Coordinating travel and other arrangements for author tours.
Responding to a variety of calls from media, authors, and booksellers.
Communicating between the Marketing, Editorial, Sales, and Production departments.
Maintaining media clips, press contacts, and detailed logs of publicity projects in an internal database system.
Performing online research to acquire publicity contacts.
Supporting the publicity department with bill coding and reconciling and communicating with warehouse team.
Escorting authors to local media appearances and events.
Providing general administrative support, including mailings, photocopying, processing invoices, filing, billing, expense reports, etc.
Presenting publicity plans and updates for assigned titles at marketing meetings and sales conference.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree (English, Communications, or related field)
Minimum of one year working in Publishing field (internship)
Experience with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)

Preferred:

Master’s degree
Experience using Google Docs
Experience with Cision
Experience with InDesign and Photoshop
