BenBella is looking for a superstar Acquisitions Editor or Executive Editor to join its acquisitions team.

The successful candidate will acquire quality commercial nonfiction across a broad range of genres, including business, health, popular science, social science, current events, true crime, celebrity memoir, and social issues.

This position is highly entrepreneurial, with an emphasis on developing innovative ways to successfully and profitably acquire highly commercial nonfiction. BenBella is highly entrepreneurial as well, allowing the successful candidate to acquire books with a minimum of red tape, and the ability to craft creative deal structures that are customized to the needs of the author.

BenBella is open to applications from both up-and-coming acquisitions editors and seasoned veterans for this position, and will compensate the successful candidate accordingly. We are looking for a minimum of five years of editorial/acquisitions experience.

The position will be well-compensated with aggressive, performance-based compensation growth available for the successful applicant. Director-level candidates are eligible for significant stock options.

BenBella is a virtual company, and the successful candidate will work from home and can be based anywhere in the U.S.

Acquisitions at BenBella

BenBella is a nonfiction independent press that competes directly with the big 5 publishers for most of its acquisitions. 95%+ of our acquisitions are agented. While the majority of its deals are traditional, BenBella often wins important acquisitions by offering creative and aggressive deal structures, including high-upside profit share arrangements.

BenBella wins over 50% of the projects it makes offers on, and its success is due to both its creative deal structures and its reputation for providing authors with a superior publishing experience.

Responsibilities and Role

The essential responsibility of the position is to help BenBella acquire fantastic, commercially successful books and build strong, long-term relationships with authors and agents.

The successful candidate will work as part of a highly effective acquisitions team, while also operating with considerable independence.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to help shape the details of the position based on their experiences and preferences.


The successful candidate will have at least five years of nonfiction editorial experience, with an impressive track record of successful acquisitions.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

• Strong editorial judgment for nonfiction acquisitions
• Ability to establish and maintain excellent, long-term relationships with authors, agents, and staff
• Strong verbal and written communication skills and excellent organizational skills
• Entrepreneurial instincts and creative approaches to winning projects
