Salary: Competitive to similar positions at a traditional publishing house.

Overview: We are looking to hire three (3) full-time managing editors. Responsibilities will include editing and reviewing full-length manuscripts, book proposals, and managing the editorial process. The position will allow the managing editor to work from a home office primarily, though candidates will need to commute to one of our offices as needed (likely 3-5 times per month); we prefer that candidates live within a two-hour commute to one of our offices.

The Position
KAA is looking for an experienced, talented, and well-organized Managing Editor whose primary responsibility will be building outlines for incoming projects and editing and reviewing drafts for authors, publishers, and agents. As such, Managing Editors must be competent working in a range of genres and be aware of current publishing industry trends. The ideal candidate must have 3+ years of experience as an editor at a major publishing house and be wiling to travel to our offices when needed (likely 3-5 times a month).

The managing editor role is a key position at our firm as they are responsible for reviewing/assessing clients' book concepts, determining the positioning, building an outline, reviewing/editing ghostwritten drafts, keeping the writer and author on task and managing delivery deadlines, and ensuring that the writing satisfies the expectations of both the author and the agent and/or publisher.

We are looking for charismatic candidates who can excel in a leadership position and ensure our clients feel cared for and in the hands of a consummate professional.

Responsibilities
• Reviewing, editing, and evaluating book concepts, proposals, and full-length manuscripts; providing feedback and revisions to authors/writers/ghostwriters; and line editing as needed
• Act as key liaison between project management, the writing staff, and the client (author, publisher, and/or agent), set schedules, and deadline management
• Review and assess book concepts
• Participate in publishing strategy and book-planning sessions with clients and writers
• Develop, nurture, and maintain new and ongoing relationships with authors, artists, agents, and other industry professionals
• Assist in training staff and communicating procedural changes
• Maintain up-to-date records of all projects in the appropriate systems
• Be aware of trends and competition in the publishing industry

Requirements
• Located within the Greater NYC Area, Los Angeles County, or Nashville, TN
• 3+ years of experience as an editor, associate editor, acquisitions editor, or related position at a major traditional book publisher
• High level of competency required in Microsoft Word
• Outstanding writing, research, communication, and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail
• Must manage projects independently and take necessary steps to achieve goals
• Deliver prompt, accurate work and demonstrate ability to follow through with tasks
• Strong interpersonal and mentoring skills and the ability to deal with challenging clients and high pressure situations

Compensation
The first two months of employment will be a trial period. If all parties agree the role is a good fit and job performance is satisfactory, we will move forward with full-time salaried position.
