With the Production Manager, you will manage a list of around 30 hardcover and paperback titles a year. Your responsibilities will include:

- Communicating directly with authors from initial manuscript stage to final execution before printer stage
- Creating and maintaining book schedules
- Hiring and supervising freelance copyeditors/proofreaders, cover and page designers, and indexers
- Working with printers to maintain quality and meet timeline expectations
- Proofreading jacket mechanical and page proofs before sending to press and at the printer stage; copyediting promotional copy
- Working in Photoshop and InDesign to produce advanced galleys before publication
- Maintaining Filemaker database and distributor’s database for all titles
- Monitoring inventory and managing reprints of recent and backlist titles

Please apply if you meet these qualifications:

- 3-5 years’ experience in book publishing, specifically print production or editorial
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, flexible, and able to prioritize
- A team player who is capable of leading a small team and taking initiative
- Thorough, accurate, and articulate verbal and written communication skills
- Maintains focus in a high-energy, fast-paced environment
- Comfortable in Mac platform. Adobe Creative Suite skills a plus
- Knowledge of Chicago Handbook of Style helpful
About Our  
Encounter Books is seeking a Director of Production to join our small team located in the heart of Union Square. We are a non-profit independent publisher of serious nonfiction titles, focusing on political science, history, and philosophy books with a conservative leaning. This job will entail overseeing all aspects of print and digital production as well as managing the production team, consisting of you and the Production Manager. This includes working closely with printers to meet schedule, quality, and budget requirements, as well as freelancers for editorial and design work, attending and participating in regular staff meetings, and working closely with authors. Candidates need to have strong attention to detail with the ability to work independently in a deadline-driven and fast-paced environment.
