Chronicle Books has an opening for a Contracts Administrator that will report to the Director of Contracts. The person in this role will be primarily responsible for drafting agreements for properties acquired by the editorial staff, reviewing and commenting upon agreements drafted by third parties, ensuring consistency of contract terms with company policies and goals, maintaining and updating the boilerplate contracts as required by changes in procedure or law, negotiating contractual and boilerplate issues with authors, illustrators, licensors, and agents, filing for copyright registration for individual titles through the Copyright Office website, and entering deal details for contracts in the Publisher’s royalty accounting system. In addition, the Administrator will answers questions concerning digital rights, legal and/or contractual issues or will refer questions to the appropriate parties.

The position requires two to four years of experience working with contracts, including negotiation skills and an understanding of issues affecting the publishing business. Experience drafting and negotiating licensing agreements, and familiarity with intellectual property law, including copyright and trademark law, is preferred. The Administrator must have strong organizational skills, experience in working with deadlines, the ability to handle several tasks at once, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently, in addition to working as a team member of the Contracts Group. General computer skills, including a proficiency in Word and Excel, are also required.
