The Quarto Group is seeking a Design Manager who will be responsible for the overall management and success of the Design Department. The Design Manager will coordinate and manage all stages of book design and production, ensuring graphic excellence, accuracy, and adherence to budget requirements of assigned books. These responsibilities include overseeing cover and interior page design, and page layout. This position will be in our Seattle office location. Come join the Seattle team!

The key responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to:
o Manage workflow of the department and adjust workload as appropriate based on number of titles and staff skill levels
o Oversee the tracking and reporting of all project and title schedules
o Develop and manage book and departmental budgets
o Evaluate and track performance and deliverables of Design staff and prepare annual reviews for each member of the team
o Train or supervise the training of new Design staff as needed
o Develop and maintain a pool of professional freelancer designers that can work at or below budget costs
o Communicate design direction and schedules, write contracts for all design freelancers, and process related invoicing
o Provide guidance for both internal and freelance designers to ensure packaging and book cover designs are compelling, relevant, and on trend
o Reviews all passes to ensure elements, standards, and specs meet or exceed expectations
o Motivate and inspire the Design Department to generate consistently high-quality, competitive, and marketable work, as well as to create profitable and innovative book ideas
o Proactively strive to improve Design Department's processes, skills, and knowledge

Do you have the following skills and qualifications?
o A minimum of 5 years' print-design experience
o Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design
o Publishing industry experience required (book publishing experience desired)
o Supervisory experience
o Strong background in design with hands-on expertise in digital page layout techniques
o Proficient in current Adobe Creative Suite (including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat) on a Mac-based platform. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
o Broad understanding of current book production technology and procedures
o Strong planning and organizational skills as well as excellent verbal and written communication skills
o Highly motivated, self-starting with initiative and drive to succeed
o Connection to an extensive network of freelance designers, illustrators, agents, and other influencers
o Must be able to work well with others. Must be service-oriented and motivated, and must demonstrate initiative, ability to work under stress, ability to work diplomatically at all levels, and possess strong negotiation skills and the ability to prioritize
o Strong documentation skills and attention to detail
o Ability to communicate with key management, vendors, and colleagues on a regular basis
o Ability to determine work-flow, set priorities, assess special projects, and evaluate cost estimate work with vendors
o Ability to understand the market and design trends for books and toys; the needs of retailers and clients (author, publisher, and estate/license) as well as the team's needs
