SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Associate Publisher, the Director or Executive Director of Publicity will lead the public relations team of the children’s books division at Hachette Book Group, a leading trade publisher based in New York and a division of Hachette Livre (a Lagardère company), the third-largest trade and educational publisher in the world.

With an expanding group of award-winning, bestselling, celebrity authors, this is a rare opportunity to work with significant personalities and writers and to play a leadership role in the success of a dynamic publishing program.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience managing complex and high-impact author tours and media campaigns. With moderate supervision, the candidiate will be able to lead projects while also overseeing four direct reports and their associated work load. Candidates should also have excellent communication skills, an established network of broadcast, print and online media contacts, as well as the ability to work effectively with internal teams.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support the development and implementation of strategic title-specific publicity plans.
Maintain strong relationships with key members of the media to secure national and regional placement for book releases, including projects with ties to the wider entertainment industry.
Develop a team of four publicity professionals at varying levels of seniority to excel in demanding environment.
Book author tours, appearances at literary festivals, and conferences; schedule and manage author travel.
Coach authors on effective interview protocols and techniques and accompany authors on interviews.
Write compelling press releases, pitch letters, and other promotional materials as necessary, and oversee team members’ press materials.
Work effectively with internal partners in other departments to coordinate media and events for maximum impact to realize the full potential of each author and book.
Contribute PR perspective to weekly Acquisition Meeting, create acquisition proposals, and attend acquisition meetings with potential talent.
Travel on author tours, manage itineraries and events with up to 1,000+ attendees.
Work closely with Executive Vice President, Publisher, to plan, advise and execute internal and external communication objectives
Managing the publicity team’s budget, including allocating title budgets, safeguarding effective bookkeeping, and assessing the effectiveness of spends.
Display advanced presentation skills during meetings with outside clients like Barnes & Noble, and internal sales team presentations.
Spearhead all author involvement at BookExpo and BookCon, including appearance pitches, book orders for events, author itineraries and publicity staff schedules
Represent Little, Brown Books for Young Readers and Hachette Book Group with the highest level of personal and professional expertise in all such interactions.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

At least seven years’ prior book publishing publicity experience, with a record of success in publicizing and promoting major books and authors.
Experience managing a publicity professionals.
Established network of broadcast, print, and new media contacts.
Must have proven ability to work independently and excel in a fast-paced, high-pressure, high-volume environment.
Must be enthusiastic, flexible, and a team player.
Superior verbal and written communication skills.
Must be detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to set priorities under pressure.
