Requirements:
Berghahn Books is seeking an assistant to support day-to-day tasks, with a focus on the firm’s digital activities, across its journals and books production departments.

The role includes assisting with the production of books and journals from manuscript stage to print in addition to supporting digital publication activities, such as uploading content, file conversions and quality checks, data distribution, and other online-related projects as they arise.

While technical requirements are a plus for this role, good organization and attention to detail are even more important. This is a good role for someone with a background in publishing, especially production, but an interest to further develop the skills needed in an ever-evolving online environment.

Main tasks and responsibilities include:
• Logging and checking new manuscript submissions for production;
• Checking authors' proof corrections and final file checks before printing;
• Providing support for post-production author outreach;
• Uploading metadata and distributing files to our respective platforms as scheduled and ensuring that digital files are posted by vendors in a timely manner;
• Supporting file conversion projects, including instituting quality checks;
• Maintaining metadata and managing ebook and journal assets, including archiving initiatives;
• Coordinating open access ebook file uploads and requisite metadata for distribution and deposits;
• Assisting in metadata enhancement projects;
• Keeping database records up to date and run status reports as needed;
• Running platform analytics and usage statistics;
• Keeping platform website pages up to date as needed;
• Processing invoices and keeping cost spreadsheets up to date.

Overall Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree, Social Sciences/Humanities majors preferred;
• 1-2 years of production experience in publishing is advantageous, but not essential;
• Must be able to work independently and handle multiple tasks in a small-firm environment;
• Must be very well organized with strong attention to detail and have a keen ability to meet deadlines and juggle priorities;
• Excellent verbal and written skills are important with an ability to communicate clearly with external as well as internal colleagues.

Technical Requirements:
• Working knowledge of HTML and XML are desirable;
• Familiarity with Mac OS, Adobe InDesign, MS Office, and FileMaker Pro are important;
• Experience with project management systems, such as JIRA and Slack is helpful.
