Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY
Berghahn Books is seeking a Publishing Assistant to cover a range of administrative tasks within its DUMBO-Brooklyn based books division.

Primarily reporting to Berghahn’s Editorial Coordinator, responsibilities involve assisting with the day-to-day operations within the editorial department in addition to general office duties. Additional responsibilities include providing administrative support to the Managing Director across a range of company-related tasks.

As an independent press, this position offers a great opportunity to learn many facets of the publishing process, but it is largely administrative in nature and requires a detail-oriented person who can handle multiple tasks in a small-firm environment with minimal supervision. Excellent administrative and organizational abilities, as well as communication skills, are required.

Responsibilities include:
• Maintaining publication schedules and departmental databases;
• Circulating schedules and keeping notes for Production-Editorial meetings;
• Logging manuscript submissions and ensuring that text, images, permissions, and other deliverables are provided to specification;
• Issuing contracts and handling royalties;
• Maintaining reader fee payments;
• Assisting in various other special projects not covered by any one department;
• Providing general administrative support for the office, including distributing mail, filing, ordering supplies, and phone support.

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
• Strong organizational skills and ability to balance a wide variety of simultaneous assignments while focusing on the details;
• Must be proactive, reliable, and manage time efficiently;
• Excellent communication skills and a good command of English grammar and spelling as well as proficiency in Word processing applications and Excel are vital;
• An interest in scholarly publishing is valuable and a background in social sciences or the humanities a plus.
