Requirements:
W. W. Norton & Company is seeking an Assistant Project Editor for its Trade Department. This position will report directly to the managing editor of the trade division. Working closely with editorial, design, and production teams, the assistant project editor will be responsible for aspects of book editing and production for W. W. Norton’s fiction and nonfiction titles, both in print and in e-book form. Opportunity to work with authors, editors, art directors, production managers, and others on a variety of trade titles and stages of publishing, from initial manuscript to bound book.

Essential Job Responsibilities Include:

• Collaborate closely with editorial colleagues to ensure quality and timeliness of materials.
• Serve as liaison to editors, authors, designers, production, and manufacturing.
• Project edit titles through all aspects of production: prepare manuscripts for compositors; traffic and maintain quality control; review every stage of proofs from manuscript to bound book or digital product.
• Check and evaluate the work of copyeditors, proofreaders, compositors, and indexers; ensure that author’s changes and requests are incorporated into various stages of book proofs.
• Edit manuscript elements as necessary: the assistant project editor should have some experience copyediting (electronically and on paper) and proofreading.
• Proofread indexes, revised proofs, and miscellaneous materials.
• Proofread/check seasonal trade catalogs and author photographs.
• Perform quality assurance checks for select e-book projects to ensure that charts, figures, and other elements are rendered and/or adjusted correctly.

Required Qualifications:

• BA/BS Degree.
• Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the United States is required.
• Must be able to work regular business hours from Norton’s headquarter office in NYC.
• Prior experience in a project editor/production editor position, whether through an internship or previous employment with a trade publisher, is a plus.
• Copyediting/proofreading knowledge/experience is a plus.
• Must be detail-oriented, highly disciplined, self-motivated, and flexible to the pressures and priorities of the project’s needs and comfortable working with people in different departments.
• Excellent organizational, verbal, and written communication skills.
• Must be able to anticipate needs and deliver timely, relevant solutions and actions.
• Proficiency in Word, Adobe Acrobat. Proficiency with e-reader devices also a plus.
