Requirements:
The Editor reports to the Publishing Director and is responsible for editing and managing 10-20 illustrated trade books a year, a combination of which include books acquired by Publishing Director and those acquired by the Editor. This creative professional will work with authors, design, and production departments to produce books under tight deadlines and within specified criteria and budgets, as well as with sales and special sales teams on developing book projects for targeted markets ensuring profitability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develop relationships with authors to shape the manuscript – including content, style, and format of the book -- throughout the creative process; collaborate with senior designer on illustrations/photography, interior design, cover design, and overall package of the book.
Build and maintain relationships with literary agents to source high quality submissions and evaluate the submissions for acquisition by providing creative and business reasoning.
Identify and develop ideas for projects for the imprint.
Work with Publishing Director to build profit and loss statements for new titles utilizing knowledge and expertise.
Initiate and manage contracts alongside the contracts department during the drafting and negotiation stages of all author and license contracts.
Manage acquired books through the editorial and production process and ensure manuscripts go through copyediting, jacket copy, etc.
Serve as in-house advocate for authors’ titles; work with publicity, design, sales and marketing to create a cohesive publishing effort for each title.
Participate in industry events, trade shows, etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Bachelor’s degree required.
5+ years of experience in 4-color illustrated trade book publishing.
Strong project management skills and a demonstrated knowledge of the book design and production process.
Prior editing experience.
Exceptional written, oral presentation, and negotiation skills.
Ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.
Results driven with an ability to take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed and demonstrating good follow up and follow through.
Proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization; takes the lead in inspiring others to work together for mutual benefit.
A demonstrated ability to conceive of and develop book projects for trade publishing and identify new talent utilizing knowledge and contacts in the industry.
