Requirements:
The Acquisitions Editor manages author recruitment and scheduling for Moon Travel Guides, which publishes travel guidebooks to destinations throughout the world. The Moon list is a mix of new titles and revised editions, and the Acquisitions Editor will be responsible for signing authors to meet seasonal title targets and communicating with authors about the needs and goals of each book project. Once a project is signed, the Acquisitions Editor will work with the author to develop and deliver the manuscript to the specifications outlined in the Moon Series Guidelines.

The ideal candidate for this position would have previous experience recruiting and managing writers for long-term projects, have excellent project management, critical thinking, and communication skills, and be very familiar with Moon Travel Guides. A passion for travel is essential, and being an avid traveler who uses guidebooks is helpful.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
Excellent attention to detail
Previous developmental editing experience
Ability to juggle multiple projects with overlapping deadlines
Strong track record of delivering well-executed projects on schedule
Flexibility and a positive attitude
At least four years of publishing or related experience

Specific responsibilities:

Recruit authors to research and write Moon guidebooks, which includes reviewing author applications, conducting phone interviews, and requesting proposals
Evaluate submitted proposals and give feedback to potential authors
Present proposals at acquisitions committee meetings
Negotiate contract terms with authors and agents
Schedule revised editions, which includes drafting revision plans and confirming revision schedules with authors
Research destinations and competing titles
Understand and implement the applicable Moon series guidelines on all projects
Develop the manuscript with the author, from outline to complete and final manuscript
Coordinate with Production and Cartography departments
Manage relationships with current Moon authors
Track sales of Moon books and key competitors
Keep up with trends and changes in travel and travel guidebooks
