ALA is seeking an Associate Editor to join the Books for Youth department of Booklist Publications, a unit of ALA publishing.
Reporting to the Editor of the Books for Youth section, the Associate Editor will be responsible for writing and editing reviews and features about books for youth and contributing content to Booklist’s print and online products in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. The Associate Editor must have a strong background in children’s literature, proven writing and editing skills, and the ability to produce written work quickly and accurately. Key responsibilities include the following:
• Write reviews and feature articles about books for children and young adults for all Booklist publications
• Edit freelance reviews and features about books for youth
• Assist in the content development and production of Book Links, a quarterly supplement to Booklist focusing on curriculum support
• Plan and participate in Books for Youth webinars, live programs, and additional Booklist publications activities
Salary: Negotiable from the low 40s; based on relevant work experience. ALA has an excellent benefit package that includes medical, dental, generous paid vacation, and retirement annuity.

Requirements:

Strong children’s literature, editorial, and/or publishing background; professional experience in a public or school library, or equivalent experience in publishing or education; proven writing and editing ability, preferably in a children’s book–related field. Undergraduate degree in liberal arts or journalism; MLS preferred but not required. Communication skills, including social media and public speaking experience.
