Position Overview:

The Design and Production Associate is a new position, intended to support Room to Read’s growing publishing program worldwide. The position will work closely with publishing leadership at the Global Office and in nine countries around the world to develop design processes and train country office and project-specific staff on great design, both in general and specifically for picture books and textbooks for emerging readers. The Design and Production Associate will also be responsible for maintaining the global publishing project database, maintaining the physical and digital asset libraries, as well as copyediting and file management duties. They will have the opportunity to help shape Room to Read’s new global content website, which will include professional development videos for book creators and e-books. This role will also collaborate with the Quality Reading Materials Associate Director in the creation of strategy, thought leadership, and worldwide training in publishing design and production best practices. The Design and Production Associate reports to the Quality Reading Materials Associate Director.

This position will be a perfect fit for a designer with some experience, looking to understand and influence developing publishing industries around the world.

Duties & Responsibilities:

-Respond actively and creatively to design questions and challenges from teams with little professional design training, and often in low-bandwidth environments
-Support the design of picture books around the world, sometimes stepping in with art direction
-Create some sessions for and support the roll-out of Room to Read’s new design-intensive nonfiction book development workshops
-Develop global training content for country office staff on design and production; implement the training both virtually and in-person
-Maintain the storybook design guidelines, and other design and production guidelines for the worldwide program
-Create and support the use of design templates for textbook layouts
-Copyedit the simple English in author and illustrator biographies and story blurbs
-Manage the picture book approval process (for new and adapted books) and approve final books for publication
-Ensure that all country-office literacy publications (picture books, student books, teacher guides, library manuals) adhere to RtR branding guidelines
-Manage the picture book and textbook physical archive library and cloud-based design file library; serve as primary point-of-contact to internal and external contacts who need access to design files
-Manage the annual book asset collection process on a global scale to gather, store, and use book assets such as copyright contracts and physical artwork
-Manage book publishing project records in the Global Solutions Database (GSD). Support GSD user adoption among Quality Reading Materials country office staff; provide data quality oversight; and help onboard new QRM CO staff by conducting program specific database trainings
-Coordinate annual book distribution to Room to Read global offices
-Facilitate communications between Quality Reading Materials and Development staff during the book production process
-Support PDTA, Accelerator, and global publishing teams on ad-hoc projects

Qualifications:

Required:


-Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, or equivalent experience
-3-5 years of experience in design, preferably in children’s book publishing
-Excitement and enthusiasm for learning about developing publishing industries
-Strong skills in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign and Photoshop
-Ability to thrive in a constantly changing and growing organization
-Detail oriented and organized, able to juggle multiple priorities
-Highly motivated; ability to problem solve and work independently
-Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
-Prior success working closely and building relationships with diverse groups of people
-Legally eligible to work in the United States; no sponsorship provided
-Ability to travel internationally

Preferred:

-Experience creating and designing digital children's books
-Experience facilitating workshops or teaching design basics
-Experience with web design and user interfaces
-Experience with Salesforce
-Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization
