Requirements:
Berghahn Books is seeking an assistant to work closely with its Managing Director in its DUMBO-Brooklyn office. Assignments will span both books and journals and involve assisting with a range of tasks from editorial and content development to general office duties.

The position requires a responsible and detail-oriented person who can handle multiple tasks in a small-firm environment with minimal supervision.

As an independent press, this position will offer a great opportunity to learn many facets of the publishing process through its exposure to all departments. In particular, it will offer a range of insights into the latest industry trends and a chance to contribute to the strategies an agile scholarly publisher develops in order to adapt and evolve.

Responsibilities will be varied and include:
• Keeping track of the daily, weekly, and long-term deadlines and priorities for the Managing Director;
• Preparing for meetings, presentations, or annual reports (running sales reports and statistics, gathering information, creating documents);
• Processing costs and expenses and maintain a range of financial tracking spreadsheets;
• Supporting books royalty activities – providing statements and liaising with authors, accounting, marketing as well as with foreign publishers;
• Entering and tracking various print and ebook-related financials, including collating and entering sales data into databases for tracking and analysis;
• Handling or contributing to various special projects as required;
• Providing general administrative support for the office, including filing and phone support.

Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
• An interest in scholarly publishing is valuable and a background in social sciences or the humanities a plus;
• Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask;
• Excellent communication skills and a good command of English grammar and spelling as well as proficiency in Word processing applications and Excel are vital;
• Familiarity with Filemaker is also good for the role.
