Manning Publications seeks an energetic Production Supervisor to manage book production personnel and processes alongside our Production Manager. We’ve got deadlines to meet. You must be a meticulous yet flexible problem-solver who gets things done. This includes all work starting with production review of manuscripts in development, continuing through preparation of graphics, appropriate use of templates, copy editing, proofreading and typesetting, and ending with completed books (including product releases, initial print runs, reprints and updates.) The Production Supervisor will help manage a team of project managers and various editorial subcontractors. The Production Supervisor will collaborate with both internal and external staff, to ensure that relevant project information is shared with all personnel.


Personnel Management
  • Assign project managers to book projects and supervise their progress
  • Assign and manage editorial jobs to other staff as needed
  • Communicate with authors regarding production issues
  • Serve as liaison with external service providers
  • Interview, hire, and train new project managers, copy editors, proofreaders, typesetters, indexers, and graphic artists
  • Research and engage third-party vendors as needed
  • Approve timesheets and invoices for production staff
Project Management
  • Ensure that project managers complete tasks and deliver projects on time and with high quality
  • Ensure that service providers are well-informed and are meeting obligations
  • Track projects and maintain reports on status, staffing, and desired metrics
  • Maintain Publication Schedule and alert other departments regarding delays or changes to the schedule
  • Monitor manuscripts in development for pipeline planning and to minimize future production issues
  • Coordinate handoff of manuscripts from development to production
  • Supervise book file management, archives, and project setup
  • Printer and Fulfillment Relations
    • Obtain quotes for printing and shipping of books
    • Create and manage print jobs, both initial print runs and reprints, including shipping instructions, errata, and other special needs
    • Communicate regularly with vendors regarding upcoming releases and printing concerns
    • Attend quarterly meeting with printer/fulfillment house and relevant staff
  • Process Management, Documentation and Improvement
    • Meet with Publisher to conduct post mortems and discuss departmental affairs
    • Meet with Production and Development staff to discuss changes to processes
    • Develop and maintain comprehensive Production Checklists
    • Maintain Author Resources, Production Guidelines, Style Guide, Templates etc.
    • Send out Editorial Updates/Flashes to Production staff and Development Editors
    • Evolve processes so as to achieve faster production times, transparency, and effective communication

  • Other projects as required


  • Minimum 3 years experience in book production management
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to hire/fire, train and supervise people
  • Ability to work effectively in a virtual/remote environment
  • Self-starter, detail oriented and self-disciplined, yet flexible
  • Strong computer/technical skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
