Reporting to the Publisher, the Director of Publicity will hold a senior management role within this dynamic and successful publishing program. Through targeted, creative promotions, the Publicity Director will meet support Basic Books authors and titles, ensuring the imprint’s high levels of success. The Basic list is comprised of award-winning scholars and experts in a range of fields including history, politics, and science.

The ideal candidate will have substantial experience managing a team, creating and maintaining a network of broadcast, print and digital media contacts and designing and executing high-impact campaigns for works of serious non-fiction.

• Oversee strategy and implementation of title-specific publicity plans for approximately 55 titles annually.
• Manage 6-8 campaigns for lead titles annually.
• Manage and mentor a team of four publicists.
• Publicize books and authors; schedule interviews with broadcast and print media in national and local markets.
• Book author media tours and in-store appearances.
• Coach authors on effective interview protocols and techniques and accompany authors on interviews.
• Write compelling press releases, pitch letters, and other promotional materials as necessary.
• Develop and maintain substantive relationships with key broadcast, print, and digital media contacts.
• Participate in and contribute PR perspective to key internal meetings, including senior staff meetings, acquisitions meetings, and marketing meetings.

• At least seven years’ prior PR or publicity experience, with a record of success in publicizing and promoting works of serious non-fiction.
• Experience managing a publicity team.
• Demonstrated booking and author tour management skills.
• Established network of broadcast, print, and digital contacts.
• Must have proven ability to work independently and excel in a fast-paced.
• Must be enthusiastic, flexible, and a team player.
• Superior verbal and written communication skills.
• Must be detail-oriented, well-organized, and able to set priorities under pressure.
