Hachette Book Group seeks to fill the position of Vice President, Retail Sales to drive sales and set direction for a team of sales in-house and field professionals responsible for selling physical books to independent book stores, chains, wholesalers and mass merchants. This position also guides imprint liaisons who work with some of Hachette’s publishing divisions. The ideal candidate will have a track record in growing book sales innovatively and leading teams, as well as knowledge of marketing, acquisitions and finance. This professional will foster positive and productive cross-functional relationships within the company and strong customer relationships externally.


-Provide a vision and strategic direction for the retail sales and imprint liaison team, with a focus on growing sales.
-Actively mentor and develop a 50-member team.
-Guide strategic decisions on matters including: sales estimates, budgets, inventory, co-op, promotional opportunities, etc.
-Develop strategies to ensure that flow of information between all stakeholders is direct and efficient.
-Oversee the team’s involvement in the imprints’ acquisition and budgeting processes.
-Set sales goals and analyze sales reports, focusing on key sales priorities, forecast market conditions, etc.
-Work with SVP of Sales and Publishers to explore potential new sources of revenue growth.
-Monitor competitive activity and recommend appropriate responses.


-15- 20 years of experience in adult and children’s publishing
-Proven ability to create retail promotions and develop other strategies to increase sales
-Strong account/customer service skills
-Knowledge of the book acquisition process
-Proven relationship-building skills internally and externally with diverse stakeholders
-Must be a successful leader who has experience motivating in-house and remote (field) teams to achieve results.
-Ability to understand publishing business models and budget/forecast accurately.
-Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the aptitude to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings to diverse audiences.
-Must be results driven, and take appropriate steps to achieve goals while taking ownership of situations as needed.
-Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work product and good follow up and follow through.
-Drives change and innovation by improving work product or process, and challenges established norms where appropriate.
-Proven ability to build supportive and constructive relationships within and outside of the organization; takes the lead in inspiring others to work together for mutual benefit.
-Excellent organizational skills with the ability to multi-task, prioritize and manage time effectively while also ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.
