Sourcebooks, Inc., a leading book publisher located in the western suburbs of Chicago, seeks an outstanding individual to join our Content Delivery department as a Production Editor, working on our extensive and ever-growing catalog of titles. The ideal candidate for this job would have at least two years related experience in book or newspaper publishing, a strong attention to detail, a passion for managing processes and schedules, knowledge of manuscript process and publishing project management, and a creative streak suited to developing ideas into amazing books and products.

Project and Staff Management

*With managing editor, determine appropriate workflows and schedules for assigned projects
Regularly meet with acquisitions editors to discuss project details and development and how to best produce a cohesive project from turnover to completion
*Manage workflow of projects through all production stages, hitting benchmark dates or projecting new benchmarks as needed
*Communicate project details to all relevant parties, including editorial, design, illustration, manufacturing, sales/marketing, and publicity
*Shepherd pages through the editorial department in preparation for production, including approving and merging changes from multiple parties, including author, editor, freelancer, and
*Route and check cover and internal pages, including printer proofs
*Update schedules and project status as needed, marking tasks complete.
*Provide weekly status reports and oversee imprint-specific production meetings with editorial staff
*Train new freelancers on styles and style sheets, PDF mark-up, ensuring all Sourcebooks conventions are followed
*Develop new and/or improve processes to better support team members
*Regularly update training materials and reference documentation
*Train newly-hired production editors and content delivery team members on bookmaking processes and job-specific tasks, and provide training and guidance on manuscript development

Copyediting and Proofreading

*Prepare manuscript and other project materials, ensuring content is complete, tagged and formatted to Sourcebooks style, according to project schedule
*Obtain and manage freelance copyediting, proofreading, and indexing services, when appropriate, communicating queries to authors and/or editors for resolution
*Develop thorough style sheets and applicable checklists and maintain updated materials per title
*Evaluate quality of work provided by freelancers and provide timely feedback for improvement
*Complete final manuscript styling (ScML) and clean-up, including reviewing changes/comments by author/acquiring editor
*Review design sample and route for internal template preparation
*Edit back cover copy, advance reader copy, and catalog copy provided by acquiring editors and marketing teams
*Ensure that all permissions are complete (per acquiring editor and/or assistant)
*Complete all final checks, particularly covers and jackets, advance reader copies and galleys, front/back matter, and internal page proofs for assigned titles
*Proofread imprint-specific marketing material and take on miscellaneous copyediting and proofreading tasks as needed

Required skills

*Thorough knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style and bookmaking conventions
*Superb attention to detail and deadlines, with a focus on communication of progress to reach desired targets
*Exceptional written and verbal communication with multiple stakeholders, including satellite office staff and freelancers
*Able to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced, dynamic publishing environment without sacrificing quality for deadline
*Ability to drive a project from start to finish, ensuring all parties are aware of deadlines, requirements, and necessary benchmarks

Preferred skills

*Publishing project management experience
*Knowledge and awareness of current trends and practices within the publishing industry
*Proficiency with FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Office (including Track Changes), and Adobe Acrobat (including PDF Mark-Up and Extraction)
*Knowledge of Scribe Markup Language (ScML)
*Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite applications
