The Contracts Manager reports directly to the Associate Director of Contracts and is responsible for managing the workload of a contracts associate. The Contracts Manager is responsible for drafting/negotiating a large volume and a wide variety of documents, including author, packager and work-for-hire agreements, amendments and cancellations, for the Da Capo and Running Press imprints, and also, as deemed necessary, for Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, all imprints or divisions of Hachette Book Group. The Contracts Manager is also responsible for liaising directly with the applicable publishers and editors, for providing guidance to publishers and editors with respect to acquisitions, and for ensuring that the drafted and negotiated documents adhere to company policies. In conjunction with the contracts associate and a contracts assistant, the Contracts Manager will handle or oversee the processing of agreements, amendments, cancellations, reversions and subsidiary rights contracts for the applicable publishing areas. The job offers opportunities for exposure to a very extensive range of publishing deals together with a high level of autonomy within a supportive team environment.


-Drafting and negotiating a wide range of agreements/ amendments
-Ensuring the agreements / amendments comply with company policies
-Advising editors and publishers on acquisitions and on Contracts Department procedures (which may involve creating and giving presentations)
-Handling cancellations, including negotiating and documenting repayment terms
-Overseeing the processing of documents for signing and payment etc.
-Overseeing the handling of reversions and subsidiary rights
-Providing support with drafting and negotiation for the Associate Contracts Director, as needed
-Performing other duties as reasonably assigned by the Associate Contracts Director

-At least two years hands-on experience of drafting and negotiating a wide range of publishing agreements
-Self-starter, able to take ownership of job responsibilities and manage work autonomously
-Ability to multi-task and prioritize work effectively
-Excellent computer skills
-Bachelor’s degree preferred
