Knowledge and skills Required:

BFA in Design,
5+ years of design experience.
Proficient in Creative Cloud: InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
Knowledge of typography, illustration, and photography necessary to create designs for multiple formats, the focus being “coffee table” and illustrated reference, with occasional packaging.
Strong communication skills (verbal and written) with the ability to communicate in individual and group settings as well as with out-of-house illustrators, photographers, and freelancers.
Solid working knowledge of the production and printing process and an ability to envision and work with various materials and special effects.
Ability to attend to details and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

Responsibilities:

Design and manage 10+ titles (cover and interiors) a season, in the New York office of Black Dog & Leventhal. Entails working closely with Editorial and Design Director in the design and production of jackets, covers, and interiors (which includes creating sample pages, preparing files to go to the compositor, and/or typesetting files in-house as needed.
Freelance 10+ titles a season, working closely with Editorial to coordinate sample designs, proofing, and production for each title.
Repackage backlist and create proprietary editions to exploit account needs with quick turn-around as needed.
Hire and manage illustrators and photographers in the creation of cover and interior artwork, from sketches to final art.
Work with Design Director to determine appropriate budgets and scopes of work for each title.
Ensure all covers and related sales assets are uploaded into proprietary database (The Vault) and archive documents appropriately.
Assist in managing a master schedule of books to make sure key production, marketing and sales milestone dates are met, as well as the creation of sales materials.
Create select advertising and promotional materials as needed for custom publishing or retail promotions.
