 Requirements: 
Chronicle Books seeks a managing editor to oversee the coordination and implementation of publishing schedules for the Art publishing group, ensuring house standards and quality are upheld, and all titles are published in a timely and cost-efficient manner. Working with multiple book teams, the managing editor will have an acute knowledge of the status of each title at any given time and will be responsible for keeping projects on track and offering expertise and problem solving to this end. The managing editor will be responsible for creating publishing schedules, copyediting manuscripts, proofreading pages and proofs, driving active title management, chasing late deliverables, and monitoring and prioritizing the workflow of 75+ titles/year. The ideal candidate will possess the editorial chops to work on intensive art and design monographs as well as the ability to think three-dimensionally and work nimbly on innovative gift and stationery formats.

Primary Responsibilities

• Collaborate with editorial, design, production, and marketing departments to ensure timely delivery of quality books and gift formats with an eye toward meeting sales materials deadlines and other key dates
• Set up titles in system and ensure accuracy of title metadata
• Create, maintain, and troubleshoot schedules
• Maintain seasonal masterlists and communicate any changes to the house
• Manage project workflow from copyediting of manuscript through print files out
• Proofread layout pages, printer proofs, and jacket copy
• Facilitate publishing group meetings, creative meetings, and status meetings, capturing key publishing information and ensuring seasonal schedule dates and editorial concerns are addressed
• Set and maintain house editorial standards; make editorial style decisions as questions arise in both manuscripts, layout pages, and proofs
• Review print catalog layout pages; sign off on title covers
• Coordinate creation of and review seasonal tipsheets and participate in seasonal launch meetings
• Hire and evaluate freelance copyeditors, oversee costs and schedules
• Sign off on approval advances and editorial invoices

Qualities and Qualifications
• Three years managing editorial experience
• Proficiency in Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word
• Proven copyediting and proofreading experience
• Well-versed in Chicago Manual of Style
• Strong organizational and supervision skills
• Detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and self-motivated
• Exceptional communication skills (written and verbal), seamless follow-through, and multiple-title project management
