Norton's Professional Books Department is looking for a high energy acquisitions editor to acquire, edit, and publish 20-25 prominent non-fiction books a year for K-12 education professionals (teachers, administrators, graduate students, and in-service training).The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who thrives in a fast-paced environment, is always on the lookout for exceptional book ideas, and has editorial expertise in the area of K-12 publishing for teachers, administrators, curriculum developers, and graduate students in education. We are seeking an innovative thinker who can tap into current education trends, identify new markets for education books, and work collaboratively in a small department.

This position manages all aspects of the editorial process, from acquisition to development to publication. Candidates must have significant editorial expertise and a proven track record of finding and working with writers is required. We are seeking someone who can acquire and publish books that make an impact on teaching.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

• Scout, negotiate, sign, developmentally edit, and launch 20-25 education books annually for K-12 teachers and professional development consistent with our editorial mission and publishing schedules.
• Seek out new authors, develop new series, discover new markets, find new ways to acquire books that K-12 teachers will find essential, and that have high potential to become in-service reading for school districts nation-wide.
• Evaluate projects to determine commercial viability, market, and audience.
• Work with high-level authors to shape and develop material and assure timely delivery of manuscript and materials.
• Professional interaction with authors, potential authors, and colleagues.
• Potential for travel to academic conferences each year.
• Present books’ key sales and marketing points to sales team at tri-annual conferences.
• Provide detailed feedback and art direction for cover designs.
• Write jacket flap and catalog copy.
• Collaborate with the sales and marketing team on writing copy and strategic planning.
• Collaborate with production department on book style, schedule, format, and design.
• Collaborate with the Director of Norton Professional Books, editorial assistant, project editor, sales and marketing team, and others during all stages of editorial development and production.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree.
• Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the US is required.
• Must be able to work full business hours. This is not a telecommuting position.
• 3 to 5 years book acquisitions experience with a professional publisher in education.
• Ability to conceptualize ideas, acquire books, and work with authors at a fast pace.
• Understanding of the education and professional development markets and the diverse needs of K-12 teachers and in-service providers.
• Familiarity with current educational research and trends; expertise in researching and assessing experts in the field of education.
• Ability to effectively and sensitively communicate and maintain productive relationships with high-level experts and authors.
• A proven track record of turning ideas into books.
• Comfortable in a small department setting where you may be called upon to perform duties outside of your job description, and where collaborative work is the norm.
• Exceptional time-management skills and the ability to multi-task across departments, activities, and projects.
• Top-notch verbal and written communications skills.
• Must be highly disciplined and self-motivated, with superior ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work independently.
• Must have a keen understanding of the teaching and learning needs of K-12 teachers and students.
• Must have a “can-do” attitude and be proactive and flexible in a rapidly changing environment.
• Must be extremely detail-oriented, making sure that all aspects of daily activities are handled with accuracy and minimal mistakes.
• Must demonstrate a commitment to serving the professional education community with high-quality texts.
• Must demonstrate a track record of commercial success within the education market.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Keen proofreading skills.
