Bridges
Aug. 2, 2014
Author:  Gizelle Studevent
Category:  Non-fiction: Narrative
Description:  Bridges is a thought-provoking and deeply jarring narrative nonfiction book written by former Penn State Lady Lion and widely publicized bullying victim Ms. Gizelle Studevent. Written during her first three years at Penn State, Bridges, carries an astounding level of insight, especially from a woman so young.

In this remarkable collection of letters, Studevent, who created and implemented the anti-bullying program Penn State Athletes Take Action (PSATA), brings awareness to serious gaps in society such as those between parents and children, Generation Y and previous generations, teachers and students, as well as coaches and athletes. Studevent brilliantly and candidly addresses the sensitive gap that exists between people of different races. Her mixed heritage and numerous experiences in the athletic arena qualify her to offer an array of unique perspectives others aren't able to. Being a basketball player at Penn State during the recent scandal she experienced further validated her feelings that there are important relationships in society that need bridging. Written for everyone from young adults, college students, teachers, coaches, and parents, this inspirational collection of letters will leave readers of all walks of life with a genuine feeling of hope.

After being nearly killed by a drunk driver and enduring horrific bullying, Gizelle Studevent has overcome the odds to find happiness by achieving her goals. While her battles with bullies were mostly of an anonymous and cyber nature, some of the incidents were so shocking that her story was covered nationwide by dozens of newspapers, ESPN, and CBS, and even inspired a documentary film. Despite it all, Studevent makes clear throughout this thought-provoking compilation that the motivation behind the building of all bridges ought to be love. Bridges is the passionate outpouring of an extraordinary young woman's wounded soul to the world and her genuine love for those in it.
