THE ONION FILES and THE CRESCENT ONION
June 5, 2014
Author:  R.P. (Val) Pattee, Major General (Ret.)
Category:  Fiction: Thriller
Description:  In THE ONION FILES, retired CIA operative Jim Buchan must decipher layers of cyber-terrorist attacks to determine their objective and their source before they threaten millions of lives and the infrastructure and security of the entire nation.

Along with his computer security expert son, Mark, and his policy analyst wife, Leigh, Buchan is pulled into an ever-widening web of international conspiracy, taunted by his former nemesis Moussada Kazim al-Takhta. Kazim had slipped through his fingers before, nearly killing Buchan in the process. Now Buchan must risk not only himself, but his family, to keep Kazim from winning the final set in their deadly game of cat-and-mouse. To assure Kazim's defeat, he must rely on the strangest of bedfellows, his Cold War counterpart, former KBG General Illyich Vladimir Makov. In a story ripped from the headlines, Buchan learns how unprepared the nation is for the new brand of terrorist.

In THE CRESCENT ONION, Buchan is again drawn into the center of a maelstrom of threats to international security. Moussada Kazim al-Takhta, Buchan's old nemesis, now surprisingly needs Buchan's help to avert bombings to internet server sites around the world and the take-over of Turkistan, a fictional composite of several Central Asian countries, by extremists. Illyich Vladimir Makov is conscripted to access Russia's intelligence might and help analyze the puzzles. Buchan and his computer expert son Mark race against time to unravel the clues, aided by their wives: policy analyst Leigh, and Katrina whose grandfather is General Makov. The plot moves between Washington, Langley and Fort Meade; Sochi, Moscow and St. Petersburg; Monaco and Nice; Turkistan; and on to a highly-armed and authorized-to-shoot F/A-18 Hornet interceptor at 35,000 feet off the coast of Florida. If the good guys are too late, a major US city will be incinerated.
