The Good Doctor
May 6, 2014
Author:  Paul Butler
Category:  Fiction: General/Other
Description:  Portland, Maine, 1910: an assembly gathers to listen to a fundraising lecture by the esteemed medical missionary, Doctor Wilfred Grenfell. Grenfell has been working for eighteen years with trappers, fishermen and their families on Newfoundland's Great Northern Peninsula and in coastal Labrador. Thanks in part to the wild adventures recorded in his recent best-seller Adrift on an Icepan, Grenfell is becoming ever more famous in North America.
But tonight something is wrong. The man who appears before the audience as "the good doctor" suddenly receives a challenge from the floor; he neither looks, sounds, nor acts like the real Wilfred Grenfell.
Beating a hasty and ignominious retreat from the lecture hall, the fake "Doctor Grenfell" is left to ruminate on the decisions that have brought him here. It soon transpires he and the ‘real' Grenfell share a common history which dates back to London in the 1880s and involves the fate of a young nurse who knew them both. As medical students Grenfell and he shadowed each other through the corridors of a London hospital, the music halls, the slums, and the makeshift evangelist missions set up in the East End.
While the mysterious imposter has stolen Grenfell's identity, he feels that he was also the victim of theft. Grenfell, he insists, is responsible. The competition between the two doctors has already existed for nearly thirty years and will, it seems, follow both of them to the grave.
