Surviving my Father
Mar. 26, 2014
Author:  Denis Daniel
Category:  Non-fiction: Memoir
Description:  A first person narrative of a cathartic memoir that draws on memory and provides a display of an extensive collection of family correspondence and photographs. In Surviving My Father the author reflects on being the child of a famous intellectual property lawyer in Brazil and on family interpersonal relationships. The author revisits his childhood and the early loss of his beloved mother, when he was just sixteen years old. He faces the anger he felt for this loss and the anguish and confusion over his father's silent withdrawal. In the process of writing he rediscovers the importance of love and humor as a means to overcome the difficulties life brings. The book tries to explain how two brothers who enjoyed such a close and friendly relationship during their younger years suddenly developed a very antagonistic and bellicose attachment. The book further reveals the difficulties the author had to face with his father's apparently British originated obsession with discipline and authority, not only at home but also as an employee and partner in the family owned law firm. The book also details the author's bilingual Brazilian and British upbringing, in his hometown Niterói, Brazil, in the 1940s-60, where many British expatriates lived, almost all of which frequented the local Rio Cricket and Sailing Clubs. It is also an emotional confession of the deep and lasting love the author has enjoyed for 55 years with his wife, a true lesson for his grandchildren. The book ends with the author finding comprehension and forgiveness for his father, redemption, love, and an enormous emotional growth for himself.
