MAKING MY PITCH
Feb. 6, 2014
Author:  Ila Jane Borders with Jean Hastings Ardell
Category:  Non-fiction: Memoir
Description:  The true story of an American girl with a different kind of dream. Ila Borders was the first woman to be awarded a baseball scholarship, the first woman to pitch and win a complete men's collegiate game, and the first woman to play men's professional baseball since the Negro Leagues era. Her story was the subject of a 60 Minutes segment. Her memorabilia is on display at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum where she has been honored more than once.

Ila's story transcends sports. It is about a difficult adolescence as she struggles with her gender identity, and that of an emotionally fraught college experience as a closeted gay athlete at a Christian school, where she confronts media scrutiny, pursues a forbidden love, and scraps for a chance to play professional baseball.
