Description:
A first-hand account of the the integration of baseball via the story of the relationship between Branch Rickey and Jackie Robinson. Roger Kahn knew both of these men intimately. The author was especially close with Jackie Robinson, right up to Robinson's death in 1972, just months after the author had immortalized the Brooklyn Dodgers in his iconic book, The Boys of Summer. That book was hailed by Sports Illustrated as the second greatest sports book ever written and the greatest baseball book of all-time.
The ms is complete at 87,000 words and features new insights into one of the most important chapters in American social history. The short list includes details of two secret meetings held by team owners regarding Rickey's integration plans, the story behind the disappearance of a secret report by baseball owners on the integration issue, the role the left-wing Communist newspaper Daily Worker played in the integration of baseball, and details of Branch Rickey's first choice to break baseball's color barrier (it was not Jackie Robinson).
In the book, Mr. Kahn will share with readers a secret he has harbored for more than 50 years. It concerns the real reason the Dodgers decided to trade Robinson.
