Tips on How to Survive Without Us is a delightful, YA contemporary novel penned by media and television personality Reyne Hirsch and her 20-year-old daughter Ms. Sophie Haines, an aspiring ballerina. Together this dynamic mother/daughter writing team have written a highly entertaining story of new beginnings and the importance of fostering deeply-rooted friendships and maintaining them at all costs.
The story's main character is Zada Murphy; an ordinary girl with lots of friends, good grades, and a decent relationship with her parents. That is until her father takes a new job across town. Zada is about to enter the 11th grade, but not at her old school with the friends she's known since kindergarten. Her once happy world is about to be turned upside down.
It's hard enough being a teenage girl without your parent's interference. Zada has gone from moderately popular and well-liked at her old school to virtually unknown and the source of entertainment for the kids at her new school, Jones High.
Fortunately, her old friends made her a journal filled with "Tips" to help guide her along the way. Zada gets her first glimpse of how manipulative and hateful teenage girls can be. She makes a new best friend in a school club she almost doesn't join, and finds out having a boyfriend isn't as easy as it looks. The road to her new life is filled with highs and lows. At what lengths will Zada go to keep her boyfriend and to continue to hold her head high after a day of humiliation by the girls at Jones High? Zada finds herself referring to her "Tips" book often in determining what move she should make next.
