Dad Was A Carpenter: Blueprints for A Meaningful Life by Kenny Kemp (HarperSanFrancisco, 2001).
"Extremely well written." M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled
|
I'm an independent literary agent with a wide range of interests. I have a particular passion for placing religious, spiritual, inspirational, and motivational/self-help works in the general book trade. But I'm also very interested in good fiction: both literary and genre. I welcome any prospective author with a well-defined and professionally prepared proposal or manuscript to send a query.
***************
"It's not often we hear agents referred to as "fiercely honest," "unflaggingly energetic," or "the guy I'd most like to raise my kids if I couldn't," but this is how Joe's clients described him when I was looking for an agent. Now that we've worked together for a couple of years, I might add one more description: "trusted friend." If Joe believes in your work, it won't be long before everyone else does, too."
-- Kenny Kemp, Dad Was A Carpenter (HarperSanFrancisco, 2001)

from the Blueprints in Dad Was A Carpenter...
Patch everything up—especially your relationships.
Never cut down a tree when you can build around it.
You break it; you fix it. Consequence is the best teacher.
The act of straightening nails is more important than the result.
Build something worthwhile. Start with yourself.

"I've been with Joe since he began his agenting. He is a caring father and husband, a tremendously organized and dedicated worker for his clients, and a hell of a good agent. Editors respect him, authors love him, publishers trust him. He makes me a better writer and his word is his bond."
-- Kent Nerburn, Calm Surrender (New World Library, 2002)
*************** "Joe is so much more than a literary agent. It was my good fortune that he came along when I was in need of someone with both extensive knowledge and experience in the book industry. He has those, but what sealed the deal was his insight, warmth, integrity and sense of humor. I'm honored to have him as my agent and equally honored to have him as my friend."
-- Hal Urban, Life's Greatest Lessons (Simon & Schuster, 2003)
*************** "Joe is one of the very best agents working today. He brings a wealth of practical publishing experience--tempered by his years of work as an outstanding bookseller--to the task of matching authors and publishers. Above all, Joe's love for literature and passion for publishing shine through."
-- Stephen Hanselman, Sr. VP & Publisher, HarperSanFrancisco
*************** "Joe works to get books published that will serve a greater good among readers, and he understands their marketability. He will help you find your niche in the publishing world. A phone call from Joe always shifts my thinking and enlivens my day."
-- Christina Baldwin, The Seven Whispers (New World Library, 2002)
*************** "Joe combines a rare and life-long passion for books with a cunning understanding of what will sell and how best to sell it. He’s a professional of great integrity and a loyal friend to his authors. Best of all, his enthusiasm is contagious. I’ve heard him pitch many titles. He’s very hard to resist."
-- Jason Gardner, Senior Editor, New World Library
*************** "There were lots of signs that Joe Durepos was the right agent for me: he doesn't take himself so seriously that he can't tell a bad joke with obvious pleasure; he does not sell books he does not believe in; his work schedule can be and often is shaped by the needs of his family. It is truly a pleasure and an honour to work with him as my agent."
-- Oriah Mountain Dreamer, The Invitation (HarperSanFrancisco, 1999)
*************** "To have Joe Durepos as my agent adds important credibility to my work. It also means I have a friend to call for the one hundred questions that have come up since he sold my book to Doubleday. He always, always, always has just the direction I need."
-- Kate Young Caley, The House Where the Hardest Things Happened (Doubleday, 2002)
*************** "The first time I spoke with Joe on the phone, I thought, 'this is a real person, this is someone I can talk to and connect with.' That first impression was confirmed as Joe guided me to an effective book proposal and an excellent book contract. He's knowledgable, professional, and accessible. I brag about 'my' agent to other writers."
-- Peter M. Leschak, Ghosts of the Fireground (HarperSanFrancisco, 2002)
*************** "Before another author introduced me to Joe, she told me two things about him. "He is very direct and he has a great sense of humor." The first part scared me, the second part reassured me. As it turns out, the two characteristics are not mutually exclusive: Joe has a sense of humor even when he is telling me something I might not like to hear. He is also trustworthy as they come. He is not just selling books to publishers on my behalf; he is guiding my career as a writer."
-- Thom Rutledge, Embracing Fear (HarperSanFrancisco, 2002)
*************** "Joe is consistently loyal to his authors. He is also, to say the very least, a brilliant matchmaker between what each of us wants to do and someone out there who is willing to pay us to do it."
-- Phyllis Tickle, The Divine Hours (Doubleday, 2001)
*************** "Joe Durepos is more than an agent; he's a confidant, a cheerleader, an ally, and a friend. Most agents ignore their authors after the deal is done. Joe keeps on looking after you."
-- Michael Leach, I Like Being Catholic (Doubleday, 2000)
*************** "Joe is more than my agent. He is a trusted friend and mentor who looks beyond the next book project, investing his time and talent into shaping a successful long-term writing career for me. A professional of rare integrity, he is personally involved in his projects, offering invaluable insight and encouraging words the entire process, from brainstorming sessions to finished books and beyond."
-- Therese Borchard, I Like Being Catholic (Doubleday, 2000)
*************** "Joseph Durepos is an outstanding agent with a keen ability to discern what readers want and an unquenchable desire to provide them with wonderful books. Joe’s creativity and guidance have stretched me well beyond my self-defined limits. I am privileged to have him as a friend and agent."
-- Bert Ghezzi, Voices of the Saints (Doubleday, 2000)
*************** "Joe Durepos combines personal integrity with rare insight into publishing."
-- Brother Wayne Teasdale, The Mystic Heart (New World Library, 2000)
*************** "Joe has sold ten books for me in the last six years, two of which are national bestsellers (The Conversation Piece -- 160,000 sold; The Christmas Conversation Piece -- 100,000 sold). I have been published by three different houses; he has consistently procured advances and royalty rates that any author should be pleased to have; and unlike many agents who distance themselves from their clients, Joe has always been like a friend to me. I cannot more highly recommend him."
-- Bret Nicholaus, The Conversation Piece (Ballantine, 1996)

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
|
 |
|
I prefer a brief query through the mail. If you have a proposal, including sample chapters or three chapters of your novel and an overview, feel free to send it. Please include return postage with all queries. Don't call first, if I don't know you or your work -- a phone conversation can be awkward, and is really the second step in the process. Believe me, if I like the material, I'll be the one picking up the phone. Thanks.
