*Please note our new address, beginning July 28, 2008: The Strothman Agency, LLC, 6 Beacon Street, Suite 810, Boston MA 02108*
The Strothman Agency is dedicated to promoting authors of significant works through the entire publishing cycle. With more than 30 years experience in publishing (most recently at publisher at Houghton Mifflin Company and at Beacon Press), our extensive inside experience and knowledge of both the editorial and business aspects of publishinghow editors and publishers make decisions, the economics of publishing, the importance of focused and strategic marketing and publicity, the nuances of contractsas well as our many contacts among independent booksellers give us the ability to provide effective support to our clients.
We are unique among agencies in having our own senior publicity director to work with clients on positioning early in the process by placing op-ed pieces, magazine articles, and interviews and on providing, after publication, targeted advice to supplement the publishers publicity campaigns. The op-eds and news stories we have placed in national media such as the New York Times and National Public Radio have raised the profile of our clients and increased interest in their books. We also book paid speaking engagements at some of the most prestigious venues in the country.
We work closely with our authors to shape effective proposals, and we strive to match our authors with the most appropriate editors and publishers. We stay closely involved throughout the publishing process, working with the publisher to assure that the author has a voice in critical design, publicity, and marketing decisions. In addition, we provide advice to our writers to encourage the long-term success of their careers.
Because we are highly selective in the clients we represent, we increase the value publishers place on our properties. We seek out scholars, journalists, and other acknowledged and emerging experts in their fields. We specialize in narrative non-fiction, memoir, history, science and nature, arts and culture, literary travel, current affairs, and some business. We have a highly selective practice in literary fiction and childrens literature. We do not handle commercial fiction, romance, science fiction, or self help.
The Strothman Agency is a member of the Association of Author Representatives.

World rights for the final book in Yale historian David Brion Davis's landmark examination of slavery, The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Emancipation, went to Knopf for publication in 2013. The first volume in Davis's trilogy, The Problem of Slavery in Western Culture, was published in 1966 and won the Pulitzer Prize. The second volume, The Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revolution: 1770-1823, published in 1975, won the National Book Award, the Bancroft Prize and the Beveridge Award. This final volume considers the antislavery movement's interaction with emerging social reform movements in both Britain and America, and its effects on the boundaries of social protest.
