A Lethal Inheritance, Uncovering Mental Illness behind Family Secrets, a personal chronicle of a hundred years of mental illness in the author's family, with original science reporting on the latest startling results from genetics and neuroscience to find out how madness travels across generations.
• In 1913, the author's grandfather died by likely suicide. Ten years ago, her seventeen-year-old son faced down schizophrenia. Costello asks a series of questions to explore the possible connections between these two events and a litany of other family tragedies. E.g. Are different mental illnesses that show up in successive generations biologically linked? And can emotional trauma, like genes, be passed down through generations? • She talks to a dozen of the world's leading researchers to decode the possible signs of mental illness in families like hers and yours, including studies and clinical trials that reveal environmental variables, e.g. when and where you were born, prenatal bereavement, family stability, that may be the key triggers for the onset of major psychiatric illnesses like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In addition to covering an emerging new paradigm in the treatment of mental illness, A Lethal Inheritance offers a blueprint for patients and parents who wish to take control of their mental health care. Costello was the recipient of National Science Writer's fellowship to conduct research for this work in progress, carried out in the U.S. and UK, summer, 2009.
