Tessler Literary Agency is a full-service boutique agency. We represent a select number of best-selling and emerging authors.

Based in the Flatiron District of Manhattan, we are dedicated to writers of high quality fiction and non-fiction. Our clients include accomplished journalists, scientists, academics, experts in their field, as well as novelists and debut authors with unique voices and stories to tell. We value fresh, original writing that has a compelling point of view.

Our list is diverse and far-reaching. In non-fiction, it includes narrative, popular science, memoir, history, psychology, business, biography, food, and travel. In many cases, we sign authors who are especially adept at writing books that cross many of these categories at once. In fiction, we represent literary, women's, and commercial. We do not take on genre fiction or children's books.

We build careers and advocate for our authors at every stage of the publishing process— helping conceptualize and shape the initial idea, offering editorial feedback before submission, aggressively negotiating the contract, selling film and translation rights, and conceiving of publicity and marketing strategies that will give the book the best chance of reaching a wide audience.

We handle all domestic, UK, foreign, and subsidiary rights for our clients—including film and television, audio, and eformats.

The agency was formed in 2004 by Michelle Tessler, who previously worked at the prestigious literary agency Carlisle & Company (now Inkwell Management) and at the William Morris Agency.

A native New Yorker, Michelle has a Master's Degree in English literature and is a member of the Association of Author's Representatives.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING, WORK EXPERIENCE, HONORS
In addition to her agenting experience, Michelle worked as an executive of business development and marketing in the Internet industry. In 1994, just as the Internet was becoming a mainstream medium, she was hired by best-selling author James Gleick to help launch The Pipeline. She then went on to serve as Vice President of New Media at Jupiter Communications, and later at ScreamingMedia, before returning to traditional publishing.

In light of the digital opportunities that are transforming publishing, Michelle's experience in the Internet world is of great benefit to her authors, both as they navigate ebook and app opportunities, and as they look for creative and effective ways to market their books to niche communities that can be targeted online via social media.
