Dharma Kelleher is an emerging author with a unique voice in LGBT literature.
Unsatisfied with the dearth of quality lesbian fiction, Dharma chose to step away from the usual subgenres of coming out stories, romances, erotica and lesbian murder mystery to write a more literary lesbian novel. As she explains, "Being a lesbian is about more than coming out, falling in love, having sex and finding dead bodies."
Her recently completed novel A Sense of Community (84,500 words) explores the serious issues of addiction and depression in the LGBT community without turning the story into an after-school special. Her characters are complex, flawed and far from stereotypes.
A Sense of Community tells the story of Kari Sullivan, a young lesbian struggling to maintain her fragile sobriety, remembering all too well that her last bender nearly cost her her life. When a landlord threatens to close down the local gay alano club, and one by one, the people she depends on for support abandon her, the danger of a deadly relapse looms ever closer.
In June 2008, Dharma was invited to be an advice columnist on the popular blog TheLesbianLifestyle.com. Previously, she has written several articles published in national and local publications on addiction, depression, LGBT issues and the dynamics of happiness. She has also given talks at a variety of venues on these same topics.
