Hot debut author, film rights available: Was it a white-on-black crime of racial animosity, a crime of secret passion, a random act of drunken rage or . . . was the wrong man convicted and her attacker still walks free?
The scars. She'll never forgive her attacker . . . Seven years ago, a knife-wielding stranger left socialite Ava Camden for dead on the sidewalk of an upscale Atlanta restaurant. She survived, but her face is brutally scarred. The police, the courts and the powerful Camden family pinned the assault on only one suspect: Joel Sapphire, a twenty-year-old star athlete on the cusp of a pro football career. Too drunk to remember any details, Joel was found over Ava's body, holding the bloody weapon. The letters. His brother is her only hope for the truth . . . Graham Sapphire grew up fighting on the city's tough southside, and he'll never let the Camdens crush his family. Now a wealthy hotelier, he's determined to clear his brother's name—and to find the monster responsible for Ava's scars. Graham started writing to Ava the day his brother entered prison, asking her to give him a chance, and offering his help. She never answered—but she never stopped reading. The secrets. And yet the truth may destroy them both. Now Joel has been paroled, only to vanish before Graham can reach him. Is he lurking in the shadows—or on the run from death threats? Ava is the lure that will bring him back, but she's not alone in the fight. Graham will give his life—and even his brother's—to protect her. The bond between them is hot, tender, and almost as dangerous as the hunter who waits in the shadows of the city's darkest streets.

Jessica McCann, Bell Bridge Books, 2011, $14.95, pb, 276pp, 9781453877814
“Bad things happen on Wednesdays” is what
Margaret Morgan’s mother always said. Margaret, a
free woman of color living in York, Pennsylvania, finds
this to be true on a Wednesday in 1837. Mr. Prigg, a
former neighbor from Mill Green, Maryland, comes to
York to claim Margaret as an escaped slave along with
her three children. The local sheriff denies his claim,
but when Margaret’s husband leaves for work, Prigg
kidnaps Margaret and the children, taking them back
to Maryland. To her dismay, Margaret finds her former
employer, Mrs. Ashmore, denies all knowledge of her
late husband giving Margaret her freedom and seeks to
put Margaret and her children up for auction to pay off
McCann alternates Margaret’s harrowing story
with the tale of the state of Pennsylvania’s suit against
Prigg for kidnapping, a suit that went all the way to the
Supreme Court. Prigg v. Pennsylvania was an actual
case, and in her author’s note, McCann explains she
was drawn to it due to the paucity of information she
could find on Margaret and her children. She re-imagines Margaret’s plight in painful, realistic
detail. I read this book in one sitting, at first to finish it quickly because the era it described
was so shameful for the United States as a country and so heartrending for all those who were
denied their rights as human beings. As I read, though, I was drawn in by Margaret’s strength
and will to survive and anxious to learn her outcome.
McCann acknowledges that Margaret’s fate after being returned to Maryland is unknown.
The denouement she gives her is credible and also hopeful without being improbable. Kudos to
the author for bringing Margaret’s story to life.

FEB 22, 2011
Acquired: Debut author Corwyn Alvarez's lit-fic novel, THE DOGWALKER. A sweetheart of a book, beautifully written. There are echoes of Forest Gump and Chauncy Gardener in this gentle yet profound story. Pub Date Feb 2012
Meet Benny, a distant literary cousin to Holden Caulfield, mixed with a bit of Huck Finn and a hint of Steinbeck’s Lennie. He’s 17, a high school dropout, AC/DC fan, manager of his own dog walking business, and sees himself as the greatest champion of dogs that ever walked the planet, a captain on his own ship of dogs. His code of life is very canine: he’s comfortable with routine, doesn’t care much about what he looks like, has strong instincts about people and is therefore selective (and loyal) in his circle of associates. Despite his disabilities (low IQ and epilepsy) he neither feels sorry for himself nor displays any inferiority complex; instead, ironically enough, he becomes the defacto- guardian to a cast of misfits and outcasts mired by poor decisions or scarred in other ways. Somehow Benny manages to remain unpolluted and, like a St. Bernard, committed to delivering these outsiders to safer shores. His life, however, becomes derailed when a chance meeting with Chloe, an anorexic prostitute, introduces him to the possibility of love. Even though everything about Chloe signals trouble and reflects her deeply damaged state, to Benny she’s just a pure as the driven snow. Like Don Quixote, who nourishes his noble quest with an imagination that stays clear of the soot and grime of reality, Benny instead dismisses her egregious faults as mere peccadilloes and asks her to marry him.
Writing with assurance and with a gentle steady hand, Corwyn Alvarez’s debut has created a singularly likable and memorable character. His Benny has depth and eccentricities. Although his grasp on reality is slightly askew, like a benign Travis Bickle in Taxi Driver, he has heart and is someone we come to admire. I hope you will feel the same way as I do about the novel and can see it on your list.

Feb. 19, 2011
Acquired: ALIAS DRAGONFLY, Jane Singer. Strong YA novel about a teen spy. Publishing fall 2011. Agent Robert Astle.
"Don't love a spy," warns fifteen year old Pinkerton agent Maddie Bradford, a lonely, rebellious outsider with a mind on fire and a photographic memory. It is 1861, the Civil War has just started and this motherless teen must move with her soldier-father from New Hampshire to Washington, DC; a city at war, packed cheek by jowl with soldiers, Rebel spies, slave catchers, and traitors of all stripes bent on waging a war of destruction against the Union, and President Lincoln himself.
Maddie’s journal, written in secret, of course, begins with her arrival at her aunt's DC boardinghouse through the first year of the Civil War, a time as Maddie puts it, “full of dips and dangers," when she becomes a fearless Union spy. And then there is the mysterious, maddening Jake Whitestone, a young man who awakens something equally dangerous in Maddie: Love in a time of terror.
Civil War historian, author, and lecturer Jane Singer brings her unique voice to Alias Dragonfly.

Ruling the No. 1 and No. 2 spots on the Kindle free list today: LIFE FROM SCRATCH and BRIDGE TO HAPPINESS.
We're very enthusiastic about this fall title: THE WEDDING GIFT, by Kathleen McKenna. This debut author is a former juvenile counselor; she has thrown herself into her writing, with eight novels completed and waiting to publish (Two books, including THE WEDDING GIFT, were previously published by a small press, but rights have now reverted to McKenna and Bell Bridge has acquired TWG.)
McKenna has a talent for getting people to talk to her; in the course of research for her highly eclectic novels (gothic mystery, celebrity drama, horror, paranormal)she's interviewed murderers, famous authors and brand-name celebrity party girls.
THE WEDDING GIFT has touches of THE LOVELY BONES and PARANORMAL ACTIVITY combined with a wryly different heroine. In McKenna's own words:
“A Southern Gothic paranormal story (ghosts, no vamps) told in the voice of a crazy charming small town beauty queen who runs for corn princess, loses the boy she wants and marries the idiot son of the town's richest family--all before senior year is over. Marrying for money can be really dangerous. Leeann’s new mother-in-law is beyond horrible and the wedding gift she receives is a little off too. Mrs. Willetts, Leeann’s new in-law is appalled at her son’s choice so as a tongue in cheek wedding gift she gives the newlyweds a fabulous antebellum mansion, one still occupied by an earlier beautiful, unwanted bride who lived there and killed there.”
Riding the top ten Free Kindle list tonight: Jill Barnett's BRIDGE TO HAPPINESS at No. 1 and Melissa Ford's LIFE FROM SCRATCH at No. 7.

We're very disappointed that Amazon has, apparently, caved to complaints from the Big 6 publishers and will now begin separating the free Kindle books from the regular bestseller list. Here's the real rub: the Big 6 offer free editions of their books on Kindle, just like the rest of us do. But *our* free books are kicking *their* free books' butts. TENDER GRACES by Kat Magendie has ruled the top three at Kindle since it went on sale a week ago.
If the Big 6 don't think the freebies represent what readers really want, then how come the Big 6 aren't dominating the list with their own free titles? (from major authors such as James Patterson.)
This really smells like a corporate coup to drive the little pubs off the scene. Why is Amazon caving? It's not like the free books aren't driving sales. In the past three months our free titles have promoted sales of our books both in print and Kindle, putting a LOT of money in Amazon's coffers.
So why is Amazon penalizing us and other presses by kicking our books off the main lists? Will the new "Free Kindle" list be just a ghetto where readers only browse? Will readers continue to test a free book then buy the author's newest title or other backlist, as they're doing now?
Dear Amazon: WHY FIX SOMETHING THAT AIN'T BROKEN?
See my comments in the L.A. Times Jacket Flap blog, also at Galley Cat.

January 26, 2010
Yesterday Amazon.com sent us the December numbers on our Kindle ebook giveaways and sales. We're not ready to announce the full results (we want to see January numbers too, which won't be available for several weeks) but I can say this much: the critics who claim that only a few thousand downloads will put a book in the Kindle top ten are very VERY wrong. The figures we've got for, essentially, one prime week of promotions on Kindle at the end of the month, will blow ALL claims of low-download figures out of the water. And that was before our books took over four of the five top slots after Jan 1. Those figures, which will be in the January report, will certainly be interesting.
January 21, 2010
Coming soon, Book trailer, FROST MOON.
January 20, 2010
First review, FROST MOON, Anthony Francis.
From Bitten By Books
"Brilliant... reserve a place on your book shelf."
January 19, 2010
Another Kindle promo success story: one of the five titles we placed for free on Kindle after Xmas was Carolyn McSparren's four-year-old women's fiction novel, ALL GOD'S CREATURES, the story of a Memphis debutante, circa 1960, who defies convention to become a trailblazing veterinarian. Chock full of great anecdotes McSparren gathered from women veterinarians, both about their human and animal-patient escapades, the book is a great read but never really found a wide audience--until now. The Kindle promo garnered a rush of glowing reviews from readers (as good as James Herriot's books, several said) and print sales shot up.
Now we're relaunching the book with a massive e-galley giveaway next month at Library Thing.
Look for these titles, free, on Kindle, in March: BITE ME, Parker Blue's book one of the Demon Underground series, a YA urban fantasy series set in Texas and featuring a teen half-demon vamp fighter. Also PRIMITIVE, by ex-NBC newsman Mark Nykanen, an eco-thriller featuring a kidnapped fashion model, a neo-primitive cult, and a plot by the CIA to hide a catastrophic bit of news about global warming.
January 18, 2010
The Crossroads Cafe, Deborah Smith, continues to stay on Amazon bestseller list even though the free giveaway ended more than a week ago. the book now has more than 100 great reviews and an overall rating of 4.5 stars.
Pulitzer nominee Janice Daugharty's first Young Adult book, THE LITTLE KNOWN, launches this week. A coming of age story set in segregated Ga. town 1960's, starring a young AA boy who finds a robber's lost loot and begins playing Secret Santa for needy neighbors, black and white.
January 16, 2010
Books we'd like to find and buy: 1. A mystery series set in the world of Civil War reenactors. 2. Regency romances, both new and reprints. 3. As always, more fantasy novels, both YA and adult, all types. 4. Self-help and how-to, especially crafts and tarot-card reading.
January 14, 2010
SIGNED: Author Janice Daugharty (THE LITTLE KNOWN) for a second book. BIG EDDY is the multi-generational saga of a family trying to preseve a Southern home.
Updated January 13, 2010
Slate Magazine covered our "Kinder-ella" story about author Gayle Trent's success following the free promo for her mystery series on Amazon.
SIGNED: Author Deborah Grace Staley, for three more novels in the popular ANGEL RIDGE series. Small-town romances, charming, gentle, set in the mountains of Tennesee. Book 3, Mountain Mist, comes out in September 2010; Books 4, 5 and 6 in 2011-2012.
Today on Amazon, our Kalayna Price's ONCE BITTEN is the Number 2 book in Fantasy. Number 1 is Stephanie Meyers and Number 3 is Stephanie Meyers. Way to keep some great company, Kalayna!
The Crossroads Cafe, Deborah Smith, remains Number 1 on Amazon Kindle, even though the sale has ended and the book is back to its regular 9.99 price.
In other good news; Gayle Trent, our mystery author (Daphne Martin cake decorating series, MURDER TAKES THE CAKE and DEAD PAN) has signed with uber agent Robert Gottlieb. He will be working with us to find a splashy new home for Gayle's series. We totally support our authors' progress and success, including moving them up the food chain of publishing . . .
Last but not least, our new fantasy series, SKIN DANCER, by debut author Anthony Francis, is careening through production and drawing absolute, total RAVES from early insider reads. Filled with adventure, humor, edgy characters and an incredible alternate reality, this story of a "magical tattoo artist" in modern Atlanta is going to rock the fantasy readers' world. Book one, FROST MOON, introduces the coolest heroine evah: tattoo specialist and "skin dancer" Dakota Frost, a tall, gorgeous, bi-sexual twenty-something whose tats are admiringly known as "Frost bites."
Dakota is caught up in a police investigation into serial killings of tattooed victims, and also plunges into the middle of Atlanta's vampire and were-shifter societies, when she's asked to ink a "control charm" into the skin of a werewolf who is a suspect in the killings.
Seductive, surprising, filled with astonishing scenes evoking visuals we can't easily describe, this series, we predict, will score film and/or TV options and could become a major franchise.
Review copies are now available. email Deb Smith, Editor, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Other projects moving through production for spring pub dates are: A DOG NAMED SLUGGER, Leigh Brill, THE GODDESS OF FRIED OKRA, by Jean Brashear (with a long list of fabulous author endorsements, including Susan Wiggs, Stella Cameron, Pamela Morsi and Debbie Macomber!), Bo Sebastian's THE GIRLFRIEND'S GUIDE TO UNDERSTANDING MEN, WRITTEN BY A GAY FRIEND (carrying endorsements from entertainers LeeAnn Rimes and Mindy McCready!) TWICE DEAD, Kalayna Price's second vampire novel, TRY ME, Parker Blue's new YA vamp novel, and introducing a fantastic new debut author, LISA TURNER, whose suspense novel, A DEATH IN DIXIE, will be listed here soon for consideration.
Old news from week of Jan 4:
Wow, what a week! BelleBooks titles took four of the five top spots at Amazon Kindle, occupying at one point both Number one (THE CROSSROADS CAFE, Deborah Smith) and Number two (MURDER TAKES THE CAKE, Gayle Trent.) Also, the books dominated their respective bestseller categories in both print and ebook. The unexpected success of BelleBooks' decision to give away some ebook editions free for two weeks following Christmas has led to widespread publicity for BelleBooks and individual authors; including rights inquiries and one author being contacted by a major big-time literary agent. Kalayna Price's ONCE BITTEN was Number One in Fantasy. The excerpt for her sequel, TWICE DEAD, received 2,000 views in two days at Scribd.com.
We will definitely be trying this type of giveaway again in the future.
