The Plains Agency came to be the summer of 2008. I have Jenny Meyer, my foreign rep, to thank for the name. Since I’m in the Midwest and, frankly, surrounded by farmland it seemed appropriate. Having worked with a prominent agency for 13 years with offices in New York and the Midwest, it was time to strike out on my own. I take gifted writing seriously, although I retain a healthy, practical perspective in regard to The Business. And, I hope, a somewhat affable sense of humor. I’m in Wisconsin after all, who am I kidding?
Like any agent, I’m impressed by great writing. Please don’t query me with the next great “fictional novel.” I specialize in literary and commercial fiction as well as engaging non-fiction. I tend to be drawn to women’s fiction, mystery/suspense and even a jaunty romance now and again. Well done fantasy and science fiction are also a specialty. Send me something that keeps me up all night and I’m in it for the long haul. In non-fiction, I gravitate to business books whose authors don’t get caught up in hearing the sound of their own voice but still manage to enlighten and entertain. Projects in the categories of parenting, family, health/wellness, studies in popular culture, and spirituality also strike a chord. Gift books that are wry in nature, make me smile, or illuminate the spirit are also a great fit.
Please note that at this time I'm only considering new clients referred by existing clients and professional relationships.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
|
 |
|
1. Please note that at this time I'm only considering new clients referred by existing clients and professional relationships.
2. A query by email (query@theplainsagency.com) or regular mail is acceptable with SASE. I appreciate queries by email but if you send an attachment it probably won’t get through my spam filter so please don’t attempt it. Too, if I see a mass email to every agent found in the LMP, you may consider your query declined, politely of course (did I mention I’m in Wisconsin?), but declined nonetheless.
3. I prefer a concise, well written pitch letter and the first 2-5 pages of the work to be considered. Any more than that as an introduction is a bit presumptuous and in the words of my mother, “bad form.”
4. I will respond to you. Forgive me in being brutally honest, but I may respond immediately or we may be enjoying a different season when I get back to you.
