I was a senior publisher in the UK for many years before moving to the USA in Fall 2007 and launching the Greenhouse. Now 3+ years old, the agency has established itself as a frontrunner in both the US and UK markets, with a string of debut authors having achieved publishing deals, many at auction.
Greenhouse has an unusually transatlantic - and international - profile. I sell direct to both the US and UK myself (we take the same commission for each), and our sister company Rights People represents our foreign rights to the rest of the world. Julia Churchill joined the agency in 2009 and is based in London where she is growing our client list that side of the Pond. Our vision, in a nutshell, is that the whole world is our marketplace and we really live that out!
I've been a fiction editor more than half my life, so the agency is strongly editorial. I work very closely with authors to help them reach an optimum submission point - my goal is to get every author the very best deal of which they are capable. As a publisher I edited and brought to market both internationally famous and novice writers, and that's the experience I bring to my role as agent. Working with plot, pacing, character and story-structure are second nature to me, and I look for outstanding potential rather than an initially perfect manuscript (although those are lovely to find too!).
The heartland of what we do is middle grade, tween and YA fiction. At the moment our policy on picturebooks is that we represent texts when by authors whom we've taken on for older fiction, but we continue to assess that. We don't solicit nonfiction, but wouldn't say no if something wonderful came along - and again, we represent everything and anything by our existing clients. We represent AUTHORS not just BOOKS!
Greenhouse is boutique in size, and we enjoy exceptionally close relationships with our clients; we understand the value of frequent and supportive communication. It is a highly energetic, ambitious agency that punches well above its weight, and our aim is increasingly to become a destination agency for talented writers with real commercial potential.
I chose the name Greenhouse for a reason. This agency is all about author growth and development!

Uniquely, we call both North America and UK/Commonwealth our 'domestic markets' and take the same commission for each, and we've achieved transatlantic deals (some simultaneously) for many of our clients. Additionally, we've sold books to Germany, France, Italy, Holland, Brazil, Hungary, Poland, Japan, Indonesia, among other territories. Our sister company, Rights People, is an international powerhouse.
A number of our clients are co-represented by LA-based film agents, including CAA, ICM, Monteiro Rose Dravis, and IPG.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING, WORK EXPERIENCE, HONORS

A publishing career of 25+ years with leading publishing houses: HarperCollins, Transworld/Random House, Macmillan Children's Books where I was Publishing Director for a number of years (until Summer 2007), heading the editorial side of a list comprising 200+ books per year; additionally, I was on the management board, involved in all aspects of business strategy and development. As a publisher I worked with and brought to market both well-known and debut writers, including Judy Blume, Meg Cabot, Philip Pullman, Gary Paulsen, Carl Hiaasen, Sharon Creech - and many, many more. This in-depth knowledge of the publishing/editorial/marketing/rights process (on both sides of the Atlantic) is what I bring to my life as an agent.
I am a member of AAR (Association of Authors' Representatives) and SCBWI USA. Julia Churchill is a member of AAA in the UK and on the Committee of the CBC (Children's Book Circle) in the UK, as well as a member of SCBWI UK. We are both frequent speakers on all matters relating to writing and the industry - please see our website for further info on our upcoming speaking engagements.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
|
 |
|
If you live in the US or Canada you should submit to me.
If you live in the UK/Commmonwealth/Europe/rest of world you should submit to Julia Churchill.
Please visit our website - www.greenhouseliterary.com - for all information relating to submissions. Please note: all our submissions are electronic. We are unable to reply to paper queries and we do not open attachments unless specifically requested.
I reply in anything from an hour to a few weeks - but mostly I'll get back to you within 2-3 weeks. If I've not replied in 6 weeks you should send me a nice email enquiring what's gone wrong. Spam filters are tricky things, so it's possible your message could have gone missing. If you bulk-send, it will certainly end up in spam!
