D4EO Literary Agency
Joyce joined D4EO Literary Agency in late 2009 reading and recommending manuscripts and became a acquiring agent in 2011. She is a former newspaper columnist for the Northwest Florida Daily News, She is past president and current conference coordinator for Emerald Coast Writers in Destin, Florida.
Joyce is the author of two nautical mysteries, Boat Dollies and Beyond Gulf Breeze, [Deadly Alibi Press],the true crime book, My, My, Myra, a book in the Tito Prescott Mysteries Series, Murder By Design, (MuseItUp Publishing)and over two dozen short stories. My, My, Myra earned her a role as 'guest author' for an episode of A&E's City Confidential. (Autopsy of a Marriage)
Several years ago she was a reader for Futures Magazine,so it doesn't take her long to recognize talent when she sees it. And, because of her writing background, Joyce makes it a point to never forget what it feels like to be on the other side of the pitching table. The best way to capture her attention, outside of a killer logline, is to email her a one page synopsis and the entire manuscript. She's hungry for that jewel in the slush pile. Send her stories with passionate characters with believable conflicts.
Her best advice:
Great books are like people, if you're not emotionally drawn to them, you won't spend time with them. If you want to be a
successful writer, make the reader care what happens to your protagonists, and do so as early in your manuscript as possible.
Joyce loves mysteries, romance, science fiction, thrillers and nonfiction that leaves her feeling she's discovered a new truth.
Picture books or YA novels are not for her. She once said she had no interest in memoirs, until she read a true story about a
young man's summer as a lifeguard, and loved it. So she never says never anymore.
Joyce and her husband, Tony, live on a small barrier island, but spend much of their time traveling the rivers of America on their trawler, Code One.
