Firebrand Literary

Firebrand means “instigator” or “bringer of change” and the agents and authors of Firebrand think that is a perfect word to illustrate their agency. We have a very strong mission when it comes to selling books: we feel that “our job” as agents is to represent books for which we feel a certain coup de coeur (heart throb).

As the catch-all person at Firebrand, I embody everything about the mission and our name that I can. I'm not trying to follow trends or look for a book to fill a slot, instead I'm looking for a book that makes me fall in love and that makes me want to fight for it. I fell so hard for the last book I signed from slush that I haven't signed anything brand new in months, and that's the type of feeling I'm looking for in my next 'acquisition.'

Please check out my website to see what we've done so far -- we're not looking to repeat past successes, we're looking to create new ones, so if your project is very similar to something we've already sold, please query us with another project as we don't like to have conflicts of interest.

What I'm Looking For (or not):
I read a lot of romance but have trouble spotting and selling genre fiction, so I might not be the agent for you if you're writing straight romances. That said, I love "big book" romances (think The Tea Rose or The Time Traveler's Wife) and am absolutely dying for a great adult historical (heavy on the romance and character building, please). I'll look at SF/F but, please read James Maxey's BITTERWOOD for an idea of what kind of SF/F I'm into - It's a genre-rule-bending, smart take on a tried-and-true subject.

I've got a great YA list right now, so your book will have to really make my heart sing to catch my attention. I do my best to not sign "repeat" clients, so if you have a YA spy book, a YA vampire book, or straight chick lit YA voice, I've already got it on my list, love it, and am not looking for any more that will conflict with the sales of my current clients.

Ted is expanding the Firebrand list towards a younger reading level, so you can query him directly for books aimed at the younger set. He is interested in both commercial and literary YA, high concept projects with great "hooks," middle grade coming-of-age stories with quirky characters, and anything that can make him laugh out loud. He will also consider urban fantasy, mysteries, action/adventure books, chapter books, and picture books. He has a special interest in books with musical and/or theatrical themes.

Elana is also looking for middle-grade and young adult with high-concept hooks. Self-aware narrators, biting wit, or a dark or quirky sense of humor are always winners, and a believable male voice would be a bonus. She loves stories set in a dystopian future and also anything with a fresh (and funny) take on family set-ups. Coming-of-age stories are also wonderful, but just note that the bar is set very high. She'd love to see a new approach to a middle-grade mystery, and likes boy-oriented humor and adventure. Additionally, she does a select amount of adult books--mainly high-end commercial fiction. And she's forever on the lookout for good, modern, honest, not-watered-down Jewish fiction (think Shalom Auslander or Nathan Englander). If you can do it for YA, even better.

NF : I love business narratives, serious non-fiction told with a great narrative voice, and would love to see some amazing micro-histories. Platform and expertise are important to me (and everyone else, including potential publishers).

I'm definitely NOT looking for picture books (check with Ted), terrorist stories (no matter who the terrorist is), straight or cozy mysteries, poetry, cookbooks or (in general) memoirs. Try me on anything else, I try to respond quickly.
