11/30/05: The Ashley Grayson Agency lost a great friend and a great agent this past week, with the untimely death of Dan Hooker. Few knew that Dan had been fighting a year-long battle with a recurrence of melanoma, because Dan didnt talk about himself a lot. He didnt waste time feeling sorry for himself; his determination and positive attitude enabled him to outlive his prognosis by over a year. We can all take inspiration from his courage and his style. He pursued his own writing, including workshopping with his long-time critique group, and saw his short fiction published. This gave him great rapport with fellow authors, and he really excelled at developing others and grooming them for publication; he launched the careers of many new talents. What he would want the publishing world to know is that he talked talent and story and was at his desk, working for clients and discovering new talent, up to the last. The authors who worked with Dan know that nothing pleased him more than saying We have a sale. All of us at the agency will miss him.
Inquiries about all clients represented by the Agency should be made to Ashley Grayson.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
|
 |
|
Note: New submissions policies
Published authors of fiction and non-fiction: We are still accepting clients who are previously published by a known publisher (no self-published or print-on-demand).
Unpublished authors - Fiction: The agency is temporarily closed to queries from writers who are not published at book length (self published or print-on-demand do not count). As of September 15, 2006, there are only three exceptions to this policy: (1) Unpublished authors who have received an offer from a reputable publisher, who need an agent before beginning contract negotiations; (2) Authors who are recommended by a published author, editor or agent who has read the work in question; (3) Authors whom we have met at conferences and from whom we have requested submissions.
Unpublished authors - Non-fiction: Authors who are recognized within their field or area may still query with proposals. Note: We cannot review self-published, subsidy-published, and POD-published works to evaluate moving them to mainstream publishers.
Why we are doing this?
We have always been open to new talent and have excellent success selling first-time novelists. At this time, however, we must concentrate on the needs of professional authors who need our intellectual property management skills and financial skills. We are prepared for the future, and must concentrate on those authors who are equally prepared. We will let you know when we reopen.
How to submit
If you meet the criteria above, send query letter plus list of your publication credits, including by whom published and year of publication. Query Ashley Grayson, Carolyn Grayson, and Lois Winston by email. Do not include attachments to your email unless requested. Denise Dumars will not accept queries by email; send by ordinary post. Never send a query by certified mail. Do not query more than one agent in our agency, whether by email or post; we will make sure that your query reaches the right person.
