Haber Leaves Rodale; Modern Times Imprint to Close
Leigh Haber has resigned from her position as vp/editorial director of
Modern Times, the non-fiction imprint she founded last year while at
Rodale. Her last day in the office was yesterday, and Rodale will close
Modern Times after publishing the remaining titles on its list. "It's
been a great four and a half years at Rodale, with eight NYT
bestsellers and the creation of a new imprint," Haber said in an email
yesterday. "While I will hugely miss the authors and books I leave
behind, I felt that it was time to pursue some new ideas and
challenges."
Another Potential Debut Fiction Bestseller Preview from the WSJ
Today's advance spotlight is on Andrew Davidson, a Manitoba native
whose debut novel THE GARGOYLE has attracted considerable attention
since Doubleday signed North American rights for $1.25 million last
year. (The book publishes here in August, and also in 22 countries,
including Davidson's native Canada.) Despite planned "title star
treatment" from Borders and B&N (is the newspaper not allowed to
use the term "co-op" in an article?) some doubt readers will want to
turn past the first 75 pages of apparently explicit content. "It's
too graphic, too sexual," said Rainy Day Books' Vivien Jennings,
speaking of readers in the vicinity of the bookstore's Fairway, KS
home. "It's not going to float here." But Davidson brushes off such
concerns: "I am no more concerned about readers in the Midwest
embracing the book than I am about readers at either coast, or abroad."

Amazon's Clout Helps Debut Novel
The Wall Street Journal looks at how David Wroblewski's debut novel THE
STORY OF EDGAR SAWTELLE (Ecco) benefited from being championed by
Amazon.com. The 566-page literary novel has already gone into its
seventh printing -- a reported total of 90,000 copies
-- a week after its publication. Driving that unexpectedly
heavy demand has been strong reviews and promotional support from
Amazon.com, which chose the book as one of the best books of June, kept
it on its home page for two weeks at a 40% discount before the book hit
stores, and posted an essay written by the author at Amazon's request.
"We also had a preorder banner in May, which is something we do for
books that we think will have significant interest for our customers,"
says Tammy Hovey, an Amazon spokeswoman.
Amazon's enthusiasm, combined with strong reviews in
national newspapers, has helped other retailers take notice. "It's
doing fabulously well and we've already reordered," B&N fiction
buyer Sessalee Hensley told the WSJ, and Costco increased its
initial order to 18,000 copies from 3,000.

The PFD Saga Continues
Not surprisingly, yesterday's news that former Sunday Times editor
Andrew Neil has agreed to buy PFD from CSS Stellar generates more
attention in the UK news media. Neil, the current chief executive of
the Spectator, explained his decision to buy the troubled literary
agency, which is only just recovering from last year's mass defection
that created United Agents, stemmed from its back catalog: "If
you were an asset-stripper you would be prepared to pay this price
to close the company down and live off its back book, though that is
absolutely not what we want to do." PFD will also retain Caroline
Michel as its CEO and will give her an unspecified stake in the
business. Neil also warned not to expect a rapprochement with United
Agents. "They still owe us money. All the best tunes have been sung by the
United Agents so far, but we're going to be more robust and aggressive."

CSS to Sell PFD
CSS Stellar has agreed to sell literary agency Peters, Fraser
& Dunlop to PDH, a newly formed company backed by a consortium
of investors led by Andrew Neil. The deal, conditional upon approval by
CSS shareholders at its July 7 annual general meeting, is
worth a maximum of £4m, of which £3.75m is payable
in cash on completion, with the balance of £0.25m due in
2011, dependent on PFD's earnings in the three years to 2010. David
Buchler, chairman of CSS Stellar, said the group's future was "best
served by focussing on our core business of Sports Marketing and
Events".

High Demand for Russert Books
Tim Russert's 2004 memoir BIG RUSS AND ME and the 2006 followup WISDOM
OF OUR FATHERS was in serious demand after the Meet the Press host died
of a heart attack last Friday. "We sold out in an hour," Richard Klein,
co-owner of the Book Revue in Huntington, told Newsday's Tom Beer. "We
probably could have sold 100 if we'd had them." Random House started
shipping an extra 100,000 paperback copies of WISDOM while Hyperion has
gone back to press for an additional 100,000 copies of BIG RUSS.

"Feelings are really your GPS system for life. Check your ego at the

Survey Confirms Younger Generation Less Interested in Traditional Reading Habits
The Bookseller's Reading the Future Survey, presented at a conference
last week, reports only half of young people aged 18-24 years old think
people will still be using bookshops in 20 years' time. Looking deeper
into 18-24 year olds' reading habits, the survey found that 28% were
favourable towards the idea of e-readers, compared to 9% of 65+ year
olds, and 40% liked the idea of downloadable chapters of books,
compared to 7% of 65+ year olds. Transworld publisher Bill
Scott-Kerr said at the conference that the statistics point to where
publishers are headed in the future. We all know the book is a great
piece of technology - you can't drop e-books in the bath. But we as an
industry are in a lot of trouble; we don't know where we are going."

Lunch for Monday, June 16
From the Substitute Chef
Greetings, Lunch subscribers. I'm Sarah Weinman, entrusted by the
management to keep the kitchen in order and the helpings plentiful

Book Clubs, the Progressive Way
As Bertelsmann looks to sell off its book club arm, a new group plans
to enter the fray. Starting today, the Progressive Book Club is
inviting readers to join and buy three books at $1 apiece in
exchange for the obligation to buy four books over the next two years.
The first lead selection is Steven Greenhouse's "The Big Squeeze: Tough
Times for the American Worker", with Jeffrey Feldman's "Outright
Barbarous: How the Violent Language of the Right Poisons American
Democracy" and Hilary Jordan's "Mudbound" to follow this month. Founder
Elizabeth Wagley, a former fund-raiser and communications
adviser for nonprofit groups, said that she believed the new
book club would fill a void for
progressively minded readers. "The right has always understood the
power of ideas, the power of books as legitimizers of ideas," she said.
"I see the opportunity with the book-club structure to create a
powerful tool to showcase the ideas of the left."
As with other book clubs, authors will receive royalties
of 4 percent of the cover price for books sold for $1 apiece, and 8
percent of the cover price for books sold at regular club prices. The
club will also update traditional operation with a social
networking component on its Web site, as well as the opportunity for
members to form local book discussion groups. Daily Kos
blogger Markos Moulitsas Zuniga, one of the book
club’s "alliance partners," said he did not expect the club
to generate much revenue for his company. "I'm not doing this for
financial reasons," he said. "I'm doing it for movement-building
reasons."

The R&J Book Club now accounts for 26% of the sales of the top 100
books in the UK, as reported by the Times over the weekend, and Cactus
TV producer Amanda Ross, the club's creator and book selector, is
confident the show's move from Channel 4 to a new UKTV channel won't
affect its impact on the market. "If the move had happened earlier, it
would have affected the book club. But this is a new channel on UKTV,
and it will be on the first page of the electronic programme guide.
After 10 years, I think the club has a life of its own. What we need is
the support of the retailers. If they keep faith and the books are still
in the shops, then people will still buy them because they have Richard
& Judy stickers."

The Entreprenurial Book Boom
The Wall Street Journal tracks the growing number of books written by
consultants, real-estate moguls, retailers and other entrepreneurs.
Over the past six years, the number of books written by entrepreneurs
or about entrepreneurship has risen steadily, to an estimated 312 in
2007 from 188 in 2002, according to Books in Print, and publishers say
there are more on the way. With layoffs and cutbacks
dominating the headlines, demand for advice books based on true-life
stories is peaking. "In this economy, everybody wants to be
in command of their career and destiny," said Rick Wolff, editorial
director of Grand Central's Business Plus Unit. The sales records of
books by New York City restaurateur Danny Meyer and Kinko's
founder Paul Orfalea seem to illustrate the point, with 90,000
and 50,000 copies in print, respectively.
But not all entrepreneurs share in the wealth of book success. Hyperion
published 37,000 copies of Gary Hirshberg's "Stirring It Up: How to Make
Money and Save the World" in January, but BookScan reports the title has
sold only 5,000 copies. Hirshberg has upped his lecture appearances and
the paperback edition will be issued next April under a new title,
"Green Your Business: How to Turn Conventional Wisdom on Its Head, Make
Money, and Save the World."
