 Requirements: 
Ulysses Press, an independent publishing company in Berkeley, California, is seeking a full-time, in-house acquisitions and developmental editor. The Acquisitions Editor acquires 20 books per year analyzing data to find potential new markets, creating books to reach those markets, and then supervising the development, content editing and production of the final book.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Research trends in the market, with an eye toward niche markets
- Keep abreast of not only book industry trends but current popular culture, lifestyle and internet trends
- Attend domestic and international trade shows to conduct research and find new projects
- Develop book ideas with potential authors, work with them to develop an overall vision of the book, a working outline, possible sales avenues and evidence of need
- Present new book proposals to the entire publishing team
- Negotiate deals and contracts with authors, packagers and overseas publishers
- Communicate to potential authors the expectations, guidelines and procedures for authoring a book with Ulysses Press
- Communicate the vision and direction for the acquired book to its editor and see that vision through to the final product
- Work with marketing department to title and subtitle books, plan cover designs, and tailor content to niche markets

Skills:
- Very strong sense of contemporary culture, trends and potential niches
- Ability to analyze market data (some knowledge of Excel preferred)
- Very strong computer skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word or equivalent
- Understanding of page layout programs such as InDesign
- Ability to communicate well with others, especially authors who are not necessarily professional writers
- Ability to work on several projects at once, including projects at different stages of development
- Ability to meet deadlines, problem-solve and coordinate with other departments
- Ability to organize material in a way that is tailored to the target audience
- Ability to balance the author's wishes with the publisher's goals for quality, timeliness and market appeal

Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of experience in new product development or book acquisitions

Education:
- B.A.
