Job Summary:
The Associate Editor will be responsible for acquiring and developing young-adult fiction manuscripts for the TEEN imprint. The primary purpose is to ensure the ongoing and timely supply of high quality, saleable titles for the publishing program. The Associate Editor is responsible for acquiring/developing manuscripts, managing/developing authors and acting as a strong second to the senior staff. In addition, this position provides administrative, clerical and editorial support to the department.

Key Accountabilities:

• Performs all editorial functions including reading and evaluating proposals, writing revision letters and line editing. Reads and evaluates manuscripts and recommends titles for publishing to the Executive Editor. Oversees copy editing and author approval/alterations. Supports database management.

• Provides editorial input into packaging design in order to ensure key selling features are reflected in the product package. Provides input for vision team meetings with Art and Marketing, recommends titles and writes back cover copy.

• Manages and develops the author base to elicit the highest quality of writing. Maintains positive relationships with authors. Maintains author information for use in editorial, sales and marketing channels.

• Works with respective author base to ensure correct editorial fit for the publishing strategy for the line. Reads submissions, responds to author/agents and monitors payments to authors.

• Manages and develops agency, packager and other professional contacts network to seek the highest quality submissions to fit the current needs of the program.

• Performs basic clerical and administrative tasks as needed, such as database maintenance, prelims, deflags/AAs, and tracking incoming manuscripts in order to ensure complete status awareness for each manuscript received by the program. Other administrative responsibilities as required.

• Represents the program/company at both internal and external conferences and with the media.

Qualifications Competencies/Skills:

• Undergraduate Degree
• 3+ years progressive experience in publishing, including marketing and editorial focus
• Experience working with authors/agents and acquiring
• IP experience a plus, but not essential
