Responsible for increasing company profitability via acquisitions that are consistent with the company's reputation as a high-quality, first-to-market publisher in computer programming, software development, and information technology. Involves extensive travel, industrial contacts, conference attendance, author contact, proposal development and review, and long-range planning for growth and the development of the program. Requires someone who is knowledgeable, innovative, communicates and negotiates effectively to gain new clients for acquiring and managing a portfolio. Specific responsibilities include:
� Pursues an active and efficient acquisitions policy through correspondence, meetings/trips, telephone, and consultations with potential authors, professionals in the Information Technology field, and marketing and business managers at computer and technology companies, etc. Approximately 25% travel required as well as strong initiative and independent ability to gain and impress new clients.
� Discusses, proposes and negotiates financial and budgetary plans with clients and authors to publish books in the Information Technology program.
� Works with operations to plan and develop acquisition tools and portals.
� Develops guidelines, plans, reporting systems, etc., to implement publishing plans.
� Prepares proposals and prepares and executes publishing contracts.
� Advises authors on manuscript development and positioning in the market.
� Obtains reviewers and advisors and evaluates their judgments.
� Works effectively and cooperates with colleagues in marketing, operations, sales, production, and project management.
� Skills in manuscript development are preferred.
� Maintains current status of all projects in the program. Ensures timely preparation of manuscripts in form suitable for production.
� Meets signing, publication, and other financial goals.
� Reviews and discusses new projects and plans with editorial colleagues particularly in overlapping areas.
� Performs related duties as required.
� Bachelor's degree or higher (Master's degree preferred)
� IT, networking, and/or programming experience preferred
� Developmental editing skills are preferred
� Three to five years' experience in publishing (editorial acquisitions required)
� Strong editorial skills
� Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills required
� Must be willing and able to travel regularly domestically and internationally
